Default Big deal or not

It seems that most the cam changes I have read about utilize adjustable pushrods. It seems to me that if you are capable of changing a cam you should be able to go that extra step and take the valve covers off and use the original pushrods for the cams they fit. Is it a big deal doing it this way and saving the $150.00 and not having to go through the adjustment procedures? I guess what I am asking is how much longer does it take and what is the degree of difficulty? Bike is 2010 Limited.

As I posted on the other site, I like to go through the rockers to freshen up the breather baffles and drill the rocker support holes bigger. Also less noisy using stock rods. This of course as long as the cam base circles allow stock rods.

For most people, putting in the adjustable pushrods saves a lot of time and trouble of tearing the top end down. It is not extremely difficult, but is time consuming and messy trying to get the tank off without spilling at least some fuel. It is just much easier to clip the existing pushrods and slide in adjustables. Which allows you to run any cam size in the future also.

That was the deal for me since I can't leave anything alone for very long. I also wasn't really wanting to pull the tank and rocker boxes (Iclick did it without removing the tank, but it would be very tight). Just call me lazy I guess.

Going through the rocker boxes is a no brainer if everything else remains stock. Once you have had the heads milled, different thickness on the head gasket things that would change the necessary length if the pushrods then I would go with an adjustable.

Personally if it were me, I'd go the extra step and retain the one-piece pushrods. But then I'm not paying for the labor as I'd be doing the work myself. When I put the cams in my Duece this is the way I did it.

On the other, if I were paying for the job and could save a couple hundred bucks of labor with the adjustables, I'd have no problem going that route either.

This is exactly what I did when I did mine and it was for the same reasons. It was not a big deal for me.

On the newer bikes with 6 gallon tanks, there is no crossover hose. This makes pulling the tank a simple job.

Helped a friend (JonnyD) do his cams and he pulled the tank and rocker boxes.

If and when I do mine, I'll pull the tank and use the stock pushrods.

You can add the quick connect to the crossover hose on the earlier tanks to make pulling the tank a 5 minute job. If you mill your heads, or use a cam with a smaller base circle, you can use perfect fit pushrods. I'll avoid the adjustables if at all possible.
