--Primary chain not adjusted properly
--Too much fluid in primary case
--Clutch not adjusted properly, dragging
--Some swear the newer models "work" better with a synthetic made for it, something like Spectro or Redline shock proof heavy. I own a 99 and use redline, am happy with it, never had problems finding neutral though.

killing two birds with one stone....I fill the engine oil short 6 0z's, (prevents oil from being sucked into air filter from case vent), and use that 6 oz's to add to the primary to bring the 1qt to 38 oz's.

Exactly. Quit fretting over ounces. Watch the bottom of the clutch basket. Why make this harder than it should be? Jeeze.
