I was looking at those myself....but with 2 bikes, bought the Heims online then hit the hardware store.

BUT, all said and done, prob much, much easier to buy one of them in a 'kit' and not waste 3 hours running around town buying hardware (as I had to).

I would've done the same thing if they weren't available premade and so inexpensive. I'd have even made the aluminum part too, I own a tool and die shop, but for $25? Why reinvent the wheel?
As to the loose transmission shift lever, mine was loose a few years in. No amount of tightening the allen bolt would fix it. So I took the lever off and profile milled around the outside of the splined end to thin it and allow it to flex more and grip the splines. Been ok for years now.

If you want the shifter rod chrome, go to the hardware store and get a chrome toilet feed/supply pipe. Cut to just under the length between the jam nuts. Take one end apart and slide it over the shifter rod. I used a couple of dabs of RTV, one at each end to keep it from rattling about. It seems these pipes are chrome over copper. I've had mine like this for the second summer now and it still looks great. Not bad for $3.00.

well, when i first posted this thread in 2011, i can tell you that there wasn't the plethora of shift linkages available then as they are now. so the $8 i had invested in parts represented a significant savings over what i would have had to spend at hd/jp/etc. and to be totally honest, i'm a cheap bastard, even $8 vs $25 would have me thinking....

Newbie here! Can anyone tell me how to measure for an aftermarket shift linkage?

ive found with this 2018 breakout that due to the new design of the bike, most vendors or manufacturers either don’t list parts for it that are interchangeable or don’t know which ones are yet!

Ive found 5-6 parts so far that are either universal or interchangeable and even Harley told me it won’t work. Yetbits on and works great!!

any advice would be appreciated!

If you like having only the toe shifter, as many do, cutting of the remainder of the splined shaft will leave the toe lever in the exact same position as a stock bike while allowing you to keep your foot closer to the primary - no 'pigeon toe' effect there whatsoever.

That 'pigeon toe' effect (very slight) only occurs when you leave the heel shifter on or move the toe shifter outboard.

Very obvious to the naked eye. Check it for yourself (use a tape measure and straight edge if necessary).
I removed the heel shifter, put a spacer on the shaft, and remounted the toe shifter to the outside of the shaft I have also moved the boards out by 1 inch,so I don't notice any pigeon toe effect . It lines up, and feels quite natural.

That has been my experience in the past. Too much time spent running around, back and forth. Shout out to the OP for this thread. This time I just bought the Heim links/Rod ends with the stud.
