Any air cooled bike on a hot day in traffic. My 71 Triumph Trident which I just sold would do the same thing as does my 07 flhp. Has never shut down or stalled however.

yeah it sucks big time.... see i ride in alot of events that end up in traffic such as doing road guard (keeping intersections blocked off so the cop can go and set up the next one) and the president of my chapter has an 05 ultra and he said he has never had this problem, his scoot is stock except for pipes, high flow air cleaner in stock harley housing, and the power commander. mine is the same except i have the 95" bore kit... but still what the heck ya know?? makes me wish i still had my sporty for city traveling because it never ones did any of these things... i have to keep a steady rev on mine to keep it from dieing... my motor also starts sounding like a pissed off sewing machine when its hot outside, what about yours??

The best thing you can do to eliminate the heat issues you're talking about is to add a "parade" fan. I'm glad I added the fan to mine.

Here's a thread describing the installation; and in the thread you can find links to some actual testing I did that quantifies the performance of the fan.

We have the exact same problem. My bike was making the most god-awful noise you ever heard, which is why I cut down a side street just as soon as I could. I gotta point out that this is the ONLY significant issue I have with my ultra. It rides, handles, and looks like a million bucks. It was my first Daytona trip and traffic is a big part of the deal down there. I'm guessing Sturgis is the same?

Thanks for the information. I'll give it a look just as soon as I can.

Couldnt stand knowing what that heat must be doing to my engine while slow or stuck in traffic. So I just recently added this. Search this forum for Lenale fan and you can read tons about them.

Page 163 of your 2006 Owners Manual will describe in detail the 4 stage heat management system on a 2006. In stage four, at 331 degrees, your injector pulses will be interrupted, but only when the bike is stationary...i.e., as in stuck in traffic.

The lowest rpm, however, should be 800 rpm if working properly.

I'd say it's more of a sign of being stuck in traffic at Bike Week. If you have a temperature gauge what was it registering?

i got one of the 1st 06 Ultras in 05...ran decent for the 1st thousand miles...headed to York for the open house...got stuck in construction around noon...90*... on rt 30 in Chambersburg and the bike turned into a different animal the rest of the trip...stumbling, stalling...had to wait for it to warm up at night or it wouldnt go 2 feet...
almost got rear-ended twice when it stumbled pulling out from a stop light...
when i got home, i called MOCO and told them i almost was in a wreck because of it...they offered to pick up my bike at home, but i declined and rode it to the dealer...
the service writer asked who i knew at MoCo, because they were told to take the ECM out of my bike and ship it overnight air to them as soon as i got there...
there were no downloads yet...mine was programmed by the engineers and sent back with 25* injectors...
bike ran excellent and cooler than my friends Ultra that had been tuned...naturally, i couldnt leave it alone...wish i coulda saved that map, just to compare...
