I guess living close to it I have taken it for granted a bit. The Skyway/Dragon are about 2-3 hours north of me. If you are going to do the Dragon between now and the end of summer...I would recommend you try and hit it on a weekday. Weekends during the summer up there are pretty crowded. Most of the people out there are fairly sane, and in recent years there is a stronger presence of Law Enforcement trying to cut down the number of accidents.
The Skyway is good weekend or weekday. They have a new HD dealership on the Skyway, but I haven't stopped to see what they have, i.e. full service shop or just clothes and novelty stuff. If you can pick and choose, October is a great time to do the Skyway. Cool, and the leaves turning is really something to see.
I went there last September and had a great time. Absolutely beautiful. I also got to visit a C-141 Starlifter crash site where I had some friends and flying buddies killed when they hit one of the mountains while practicing a SOLL I mission in Aug 1982. It was a very moving experience for me. If anyone is interested in visiting the crash site PM me and I can get you directions to it. Its about a 1/8 mile walk down a trail off the Skyway. It's a shame there is no marker where the crash took place, just about a 5 acre open field with a hole where the Air Force cleaned up after the crash. I plan on going back this September and visit the site again. If I'm ever anywhere in the area, I'm gonna go by there and visit the location. Anyway, like Banks727 said, it is a beautiful and breath taking ride. Also, don't forget Clingman's Dome which is not far from there either.
