Hi all,

In the process of purchasing a Road King Can't decide on which one to go with Custom or Classic. Appreciate your assistance.

Are you going to be touring a lot, or just mostly riding around town? The custom is pretty stripped for a Road King (no windshield, cruise control, passing lamps) but is still a sharp looking custom ride. Something else to keep in mind is while you can add a lot of things to the custom to make it tour-worthy, a lot of custom accessories don't fit the RK Custom. You can strip a Classic down to the level of a Custom, but of course, it's more money. I'd probably go with the Classic anyway...

As you might imagine I may be a little biased but they are both great bikes. As a guy who has ridden a lot of miles, I really appreciate the windshield. It kills the absolute "cool" factor but makes long rides as well as short rides at higher speeds much more enjoyable and in my opinion more safe. It's an adder obviously on the custom. The beach bars are cool on the custom but when I tried one I felt like I had to hold on tighter due to the orientation of the bar ends. In either event the saddlebags are roomy but not lockable. On the custom it is much easier to install aftermarket locks. If you are planning to do a lot of touring with overnight stays I would really think hard about the RK Standard with the hard plastic lockable saddle bags. Different look but better security. You really can't go wrong with any of the 3. It's all a matter of style and function. Good luck. Any choice you make will be the right one.

I love my Classic. It comes with a lot of options, standard - the cool factor is very high and it rides like a dream. But you won't go wrong with either.

I had to make the very same decision. I sat on them both. Didn’t like the bars on the classic. Didn’t like the bars on the custom. I decided to compare the options, and also the things I would change on both. The cruise control on the classic was a bonus. The detachable windshield was a bonus. Then I took the windshield off the classic and put the two side by side. The classic is very clean for a touring bike. It has the cool factor nailed in my opinion. It would have cost me more to get the custom set up the way I like, so I went with the classic. I definitely gotta get rid of them bars though. BTW the cruise control is friggin awesome. Good luck with your decision. Either way you go, you’re gonna be happy as a pup with two peters.

You can still only use one at a time.

If I had two peters, I'd try to use them both at the same time. Like the Doublemint gum commercial, it would be double the pleasure! (Okay, I'm kinda sick...)

I went with the Custom. I was back and forth between the two I set on this one and then I would set on the other one. For me I just like the older look of the Custom I guess it was the handlebars and the speedo look and turn signals. First thing I did was put on a windsheild. The cruise would be nice but I will get by without it. Put one piece Mustang Touring seat on it too cause the stock seat sucks for a passenger. Extra travel on the shocks would of been nice too but. Whatever feels good to you and you like get it. They all got there + and -.
