Default Data Link Connector

Hi ,
I have just bought the new analog combination speedo/tach (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/g...bmLocale=en_US ) for my 2009 Roadking Classic, after having a dud digital speedo/tach. The instructions for the new tach say to locate the data link connector and to connect the new unit to it, via the supplied lead, before installing it in the housing .

I didn't have to do this for the digital version,I cannot find the data link connector and there is no mention of it in the service manual.

Has anybody installed this unit and can you tell me where this connector is (if the 2009 models had this feature)?

Cheers in advance,

Chris.

England.

On '08s it is under the left side cover - I would think it would be the same for the '09s. Its listed in the table of connector locations in my SM.

I am surprised that it plugs into the Data Link Connector - I installed an older model speedo / tack on an '05 RK and it just plugged into where the stock speedo plugged in.

plugging it into the data link is for the ecm to upload the mileage data to the odometer. it is not a permanent hookup. after you get the data transfered, it plugs in the same as the one removed.

on my '10, the datalink is on the left side, under the side cover, near the bottom. i think the 09 is the same. you'll see it, it has a rubber plug in it to keep the elements out. its attached, but slides off. when you're done with it, slide it back on to the tab.

Thanks for the replies, they are much appreciated.
I will try and fit the unit when I come off night shift.

Cheers,

Chris.

There are two connectors there. You are looking for the gray one with the black rubber plug.

Near the bottom OR at the bottom ?- there are 2 just below the fuse box. Please indicate which is the DLC J1850 connector. I have my Power Vision en-route from FuelMoto and was pre-messing today. I'm sure that when the unit arrives it will ONLY be connectable to either of the above mentioned locations. Just want to be sure...thanks.

The one on top. It will have three pins in it and the other one IIRC has 4.

Thanks WOLF. Dumb me - anyone at anytime could have switched the plugs so TOP or BOTTOM is meaningless. I think it's going to end being the plug that has the short cover - the cover that stays attached to the harness when you remove the end cap. Thanks for your reply.

Default Datalink Connector on a 2011 Road King Classic

I recently installed the analog speedo/tac with all the selectable colors on my 2011 Road King. Piece of cake.

The datalink connector on the 2011 Road King is behind the left (when sitting on the bike facing forward) side fiberglass panel. The data link connector is grey with a black plug.

If you have the siren/alarm installed this is also behind this panel. Make sure you disconnect it and the rechargeable 9 volt batter that goes with it before you start removing connectors or the master fuse. After you disconnect the alarm remove the master fuse (mine was red) behind this same panel and reconnect it after you install the gauges and put the console back.

You do have to remove the console to do it and the connectors underneath are all designed so that there is one way to establish the connection. To remove the console remove the front all wrench bolt and the second bolt which is under the seat.
