Default Solved Cruise Control Issue

A couple of months ago I posted a thread about the cruise going out on my 06 RKC after having heated grips installed. After going back to the dealer and finding out that I would have to leave my Harley for a week or more, I chose to not do that. On a recent trip from Mississippi to Fort Worth, I stopped at another dealer and talked to the service manager who told me to check a cable running along the right side of the neck. (I was in my car not on the bike) This past weekend I finally had time to check it out and discovered the problem. I have had Kuryaken neck covers on my bike for 4 years. evidently the mechanic at my local dealer had to take the right side one off and in putting it back on, he put something in a bind. Not sure what, but by taking the right side cover off and putting it back on and making sure the wires, etc were where they were supposed to be, my cruise starting working again. Just wanted to pass this along.

Makes you wonder what the original dealer would have diagnosed. Good work.

I'd go back to the dealer with the paperwork which shows which tech did the work, and who the service writer was on your account.

Show them.

That gives them the opportunity to learn and not make the same error again- It also gives the Dealership a chance to apologize, buy you a cup of coffee and reach out to keep your business. ( like offer a service credit, a t shirt or something)

which would be a positive result all the way around.

And call the Guy in TX and say 'Thanks"!

Mike

Not sure what the original dealer would have diagnosed, but it would have been expensive...and all my fault for putting the neck cover on to begin with.

The one that took me 3 days to discover was the rear brake light switch was shorted, preventing the cruise control for working.

I've often wondered about the Kuryakyn chrome cover. It sure does look good. Doesn't it cover up the VIN?

Pinched wires are a bear to find. Not trying to hijack your thread but I have changed grips , etc. and have created similiar problems. Blown ignition fuse and found wires pinched not being in handlebar grove. I tried to modify my spots to stay on with high beam and blowed light fuse when put lower fairing cap on so put everything back original. Several months later blown light fuse again so go back to lower cap and re raped some wires, seem ok then would blow after a test ride. In process of removing cap, fairing etc. all power lost, then move some wires and everthing works til put fairing back on. Finally find igntion switch wires loose and tie wraped them to handlebars, put everything back together and after a trst run no run lights again. Take radio out and reroute and wire wrap run light wire that goes to lower fairing switch connection and after a week think problem solved.

I would mention it to orginal installer but things do move around once you're on the road.

Hey Shortride, yes, they do cover the VIN, but that has not been an issue for me. It is on my insurance card. Besides, they are actually very easy to install and take off.

one other thing that will cause the cruise not to work, is where the OP was looking at by the neck of the bike....the roll off switch is there on the throttle cable and can go bad. If you simply unplug it, cruise will begin to work again. The rolloff switch is what allows you to roll the throttle forward and deactivate cruise.
