I don't Think the exhaust rap would would work very well. it is not very abrasive resistant.
If you want to know what you bike would look like with a black crash bar you can try sever things.
One of the cheapest (Other Than Electrical Tape) would be to find a leather steering wheel cover( Not the preformed style). Cut it so that it is one long piece and lace it onto the crash bar. it would probably take one per bar.
There a leather guy on here (I don't recall his name) But I'm sure he could make you a black leather lace on cover.
Then of course there's power coating. But the advantantages of the above suggestions is if you don't like it you can just take them off.
Sample pic, the black smooth leather would look good.
