A Question for Shovelhead Bob
I'll be installing the Air Cleaner kit myself, it seems straight forward. I'm not planning to change the pipes, I like the stock ones.
My question is about the advice my HD mechanic gave me. I don't doubt that he knows what he's talking about, but I just want to be sure.
He said that because I am moving from north Texas to Wyoming, going up nearly 6500 feet in elevation, that I probly wont need the download to correct the mixture after the installation of the AC.
He did say that it was advisable to get it done eventually, just to be sure . . . but he didn't think I would need it, and that I didn't need to hurry about it.
When I asked about adding a PC-III or SERT. Again, he said I wouldn't need it.
What do you think?
Thanks in advance.
The increase in elevation only lessens the amount of available oxygen, but it also changes the atmospheric pressure.....
You have a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) and IAT (Intake Air Temp) that are going to tell the ECM what the quality of air is, and it will be modifying the injector dwell for that purpose.....
Now throw into the equation MORE useable air (Oxygen), and you still are throwing the same old injector dwell at the jugs...
Yes, 6500 feet is a huge difference, and the ECM for your bike is not equipped with AFV (Adaptive Fuel Value), so it cannot "Learn" like an 07, but nonetheless, you need to have the flash done.....
Something else to throw into the equation, is the type of fuel that they have in Wyoming... Is it OXYGENATED for EPA standards..... Not all fuels are the same...
Regional/State blending requirements are varied, and have a huge impact on adequate A/F ratios.....
Here in WPa, we get crap fuel during Fall to Spring, due to the tree huggers.....
