2012 Touring Issues
I just liked the quote - not related to my post in any way. Gold Wing owners are way bigger complainers though.
I got one of the first 2012 Road Glide Ultras in my area - picked it up August 20. I had two issues - both minor. I had the left front saddlebag bracket come loose - no big deal. And one end of the script Harley Davidson on the Tour Pak came loose. That was a plus because my dealer removed it and, per my request, just handed me the new one, which I didn't want installed anyway.

For chain BBQ, I like Famous Dave's but, unfortunately, we don't have one in the St. Louis area.
I think some have a reason to bitch.
I lost an engine on a 12 Limited at 5000 miles (2 months after purchase). If you think that is just bitchin about the 12 model bikes...Let it happen to you and see how you react.
I think that is something to bitch about...the quality of these bikes has a lot of room for improvement.
I try real hard to keep a good attitude about this bike, but it is getting harder everyday. I love the handling and looks. I am begining to not like the HD coolaid. I think the legend is dead or dying.
The rattling valves/rocker arms on the new engine, compensator noise, and now the forks that sound like it has a big zipper inside them, plus just last week developed some strange rattle while I am sitting at red light in gear so loud the guy in a cage next to you can hear it. (not the common neutral rattle) No oil leaks...yet. No mods except the CATs have been removed, and safety chrome added.
This is not pleasing me with a brand new bike that cost this much. I could maybe understand if it was 5 or 10 years old. I am wondering if AMF has influence on the manufactoring process again. I know all bikes (all brands) have their little problems...but come on.
Got over 13000 miles on it now and gonna ride it into the ground if necessary as long as the warranty holds good. Still got about 17 months left on warranty... Maybe I ride it to much. Maybe if I put less miles on it, I would not have any issues.
If this SOB lets me down during a long road trip, it will be for sale real quick. I think the guys that like garage jewerlry and put only 3000 miles a year on a bike will enjoy this one. One thing I will not tolerate is un-reliablity.

My voltage regulator died with less than 300 miles on the bike. My bike was stuck at the dealer for a week along with 6 other 2012 touring bikes with the same issue. 3 of them were orange that had the chrome regulators.
HD has the voltage regulators on back order so I don't think this is a limited number of people that are having issues. They could have switched to a new vendor or changed something with the regulators that is causing the issue.
I have had 1500 trouble free miles since having the regulator replaced.
My 2011 Softail had zero issues after 8000 miles.

I believe that most if not all 2012 models come standard with oil coolers. The coolers are mounted in front of the regulator. The Cycle Electric unit is a three wire system just like the later HD charging system. Could the heat from the oil cooler be the problem?
Except for Carlini bagger apes, a national cycle vstream windscreen, and motolights my 2012 103" FLTRX with 10,000 miles has been trouble free. My '07 FLTR did well too, no major repairs and traded it in with approximately 90k miles on it last July to buy the '12. My anecdotal advice is do not change, customize, etc... the engine or transmission. I have had 5 baggers (3 FLH and 2 FLT) since March 1993 and up until my '07 I used to "enhance the engine" and modify the bike in an attempt to gain more torque and power. Every single one of those modified bikes had at least one major breakdown every 20 - 30k miles (approximately yearly). I just have become comfortable with the fact that I can only go about 110 - 120 mph on my current stock 103 HD FLT. If I need more speed I will buy a GSXR, the money for one of those is probably less than the money the mods to my FLT will end up costing once I factor in the future repair costs. Run your bagger with a stock engine and have worry free miles of fun. Oh yeah, buy an extended warranty for the length of your loan term at the very least. That takes the pain out of a major malfunction when you only get a $50 bill on a $2k repair.
