I see there are numerous posters who can't (or won't) work on their bikes getting all butthurt 'n **** when told they don't work on their bikes. I do most work on my bike, mainly because the dealer always scratches or marks something up when they did any work on my bike in the past. Also I am capable of doing it, fortunately. On the down side, the tools can get real expensive. I am planning to tear down my transmission later this year and the complete set of specialty tools I bought cost me about $900.00. But if I have to tear into it again it won't hardly cost me anything and I am a tool collector anyway.
I have learned that some people should never be allowed to use tools on their bike. They create way to much mayhem and destruction when they do so. Those people should definitely pay someone else to do their work.
You have to understand, some people on these forums cant hang a picture on the wall. Let alone change oil in a vehicle.
Ya think! scarey isn't it? After being a "member" here is simply AMAZES me how many people don't have a clue and/or are lazy.......Questions about oil, tire pressure, what color to buy, what model fits me best, what bars do you like, do i need a lift to do as service, is synthetic the best, is a batwing or shark better and on and on and on.....I don't even come here often any more because it SCARES me to know these folks are riding on the same road as me......really, think about it!! Are they just to lazy to read the manuals? or they cant read? They aren't to lazy to type evidently. People who rely on the internet to base there OWN opinion on scares the hell outta me!!
People who don't know that there bike came with a cigarette lighter AND don't know what one looks like scare me!! READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL OR BUY A SERVICE MANUAL,.....What anyone else likes or dislikes makes no difference to you! BUY WHAT YOU LIKE! Do all the Chevy and Ford forums have people asking these questions?
If I had to rely on you guys to make my mind up for me I would go nutz...no offense but come on......
Actually: being able to service/work on your own bike is nice, however being about to properly service/work on your bike is another issue.
I have a buddy who does all his own service and some of his friends.
His front fork seals were out on his duece so him and another pot head buddy got out the service manual and repaired them.
Now his bike bottoms out and the front end clunks all the time and there is oil all over his front forks. But him and his buddy did it themselves, so it has to be right.
I really don't give a rats *** if anyone works on their own bike or not, but I have to say there still are a bunch of crack/meth head "professionals" doing Harley "repair" work out there. Personally I have been in the repair industry most my life and can and have built/fixed about anything. I don't enjoy it anymore, have got old and sick, and have most all my work done. I still pisses me off how there is little real pride in workmanship or customer service and everything is so expensive. I'm just old and crotchety I guess.

plain and simple if i can find a shop/dealer that didnt make me regret taking my bike there i would have them do it. But i'm so god damn picky if someone is going to scratch my bike its going to be me!
I like doing all the work on my bike that I can. It saves a few bucks for sure so thats more money for beer, women and things of major importance like that. Some just arent going to and thats their business but I would say that the post was more pointed at the ones that bitch about costs of the simple tasks.
While paying someone to do this work might seem like a waste of money to you, I prefer to think of it as a freeing up of my time, A VERY VALUABLE COMMODITY!
So very true. If I have a day of working on the bike and a day of projects to fix around the house, that's two days I can't ride (or pursue anything else I want to do in that time). If someone works on my bike at the same time I'm working around the house, that frees up a day to ride (or be handed another to do list by the wife).

I got a kick out of the cigarette lighter thread too. As for the Chevy & Ford forums - yes the questions are the same. It's the same way on Gun forums too. What's the best oil? How do I make my Chevy/Ford/Dodge faster? Which caliber has more stopping power. People are the same everywhere.
I have tools and a lift table. I was an industrial mechanic for 34 years. I change my own fluids, check fasteners, installed my intake/exhaust/PC-V and oil cooler. I may tackle a cam change next year & take my wheels in to have new rubber mounted - but that's probably my limit. I take my car in for service because I hate laying on the ground.
It was said earlier that a man has to know his limitations.
