When I was negotiating the purchase of my bike, the sales dude was running the numbers for me. He gave me an "out the door" price. I asked him what that included, he said "bike, tax, title, license, maintenance plan, yada yada yada". I asked him to knock off the maintenance plan and he had this puzzled look on his face like nobody had ever told him that before and he said (in a very condescending manner) "then who's going to service your bike?" I told him "me". You'd think I had just spit in the Pope's tea or something.

I figure nobody cares about my bike like I do, and if I do my own service then I have the satisfaction of knowing it was done right.

There is a 100% markup in the maintenance plans. A $2,000 plan gives his dealership a $1000 profit.

Some push the "sell" a little too far while others just try to be fair.
For example :In the past i have had a dealer try to scare me about changing a tail light bulb and how it was "electrical" work and i might fry the "system".
