i have a buddy that has starter trouble. I thought it was the jack shaft bushing on the inner primary? this is a 2007 street glide, but after calling h d parts depot, the parts person says there is not a jack shaft in that model. i dont have the manual for that year bike and neither does my buddy, i guess he should get one lol. before i pull his inner primary just wanted to touch base with anyone on this forum to give me a breakdown of the starting system inside the primary?? the starting gear grinds when my buddy starts his bike sometimes it starts up nicely most of the time it sounds like it misses the flywheel!!!!! any help would be nice
assuming you have not done so already...you may want to first pull the starter and see if there's any significant wear pattern on the starter gear that may give you more information.
i was under the impression that the street glide had a jack shaft and figured there was a jack shaft bushing or bearing attached to the outer primary? I thought it would be a easy fix, if it wasnt that i was leaning towards the starter clutch assy. havent done anything untill i get a little moree info!!!
the biggest reason for this is that an amateur can cause the starter to turn when manipulating the starter drive inside the primary...the primary turns and the fingers are plucked off.
the battery cables MUST be removed before opening the primary.
( doesn't matter if the keys are in another state...)
amateurs also have manuals. i have a manual for all my bikes, even keep the manuals from my passed bikes, but thanks for the info. not sure what state you are in, my state is confusion, all i am asking before i open the primary is if there is a jack shaft, and or ajack shaft bearing or bushing at all!!!!!

I had the same problem. Look at the starter solenoid as a probable cause.

The starter on My 08UC was making grinding noises when I tried starting it. I thought the starter was bad. Before replacing it, I decided to check the battery. Hooked up a volt meter, the battery had 12.2 volts. But when I tried to start it the volts dropped to 4. Put in a new battery and problem solved. No more starter grinding noises. That was back in August, and about 3K ago.
Since I have an 07 Street Glide and had to deal with a simular issue. Here is what happened to me. I had the 103" installed by my dealer with SE 255 Cams and HD Race Tuner. After 30K the problem got maginified when the bike got hot (Summer) or went on short runs the bike would not turn over very well on restarting. I replaced the battery and upgraded the wiring, with no luck. Later I found out it was not the issue. It turns out the Compensator was not free flowing any longer. How did I find this out? When I was changing my Primary fluid out one day and I found a chunk of metal from the Clutch Ring (this is what the starter engages to turn the chain and then the chain turns the Compensator, which in turn cranks over your engine. The last picture will give you an idea of the process. The Starter is engaging on the top right of the last picture. Since I was in the primary I just replaced the Starter, Clutch Basket (had to replaced the entire basket with the Clutch Ring missing teeth) and upgraded the Compensator to the SE Compensator. The bike has NEVER started better.
Thank you all for the information, primary and starter breakdown!! i will be going over the electrical and battery issues that was mentioned before doing anything else. Wish me luck and I will get back with you to let you guys know what the cause was!!
