. What makes the woods cams louder than any other cam?
If you pick a different make, but with the same grind numbers, I'd have to assume we are talking same lift & duration... so what makes the extra noise in a Woods cam?
The numbers don't tell the whole story. It's how fast they open and close. Some cams will close the valve gently, some don't. A triangle and a rectangle can have the same lift and duration but the rectangle will be noisier, but should make more power.

The Woods cams make a lot of power. There is Woods and then everyone else. I'm not disrespecting the other cam manufacturers but from owning sevral others, Woods is by far the current power brokers.
Call Fuel Moto for the best Wood cam for your ridinf style.
What you need is a change of heart and go with TW222. Had the SE255's changed them out for the 222s, more TQ and HP across the band, cooler temps, easy hot starts and the bike sounds great. Could not be happier.
What the OP needs is a change of heart about doing the job to begin with wihout having identified where he wants the power curve to begin and end, and what he plans to do in terms of a big bore later on. WIthout first nailing those two questions down, he's taking a hip fired shotgun approach to ending up where he wants to without ever knowing if he aimed in the right direction; and in the process quite possibly creating realiability problems undesired and unforeseen.
Ask me how I know...
Cams are cool, but to make a decision based on what someone here says is the best without doing ones own due diligence and answering some critical questions first is foolish.
OP, slow down and ask first what you should be considering; think about the things you plan to do later on that would enable you to make the best choice for you, your bike, and your riding style where cams are concerned. Present your specific long term desires and ask if there's other things that you should know before jumping into your cam purcahse. It might mean doing a little more reading than just the responses on this valuable website. It will hugely benefit you in the long run....trust me.

Great advice!!!......Thats words of wisdom right there sir.
Just because someone likes their cam choice in their bike, does not mean you will like it in your bike. Riding styles vary greatly, make your choice according to your riding style and needs.
In my own opinion, I have ridden bikes with Woods and Andrews cams, the SE 204 was the best all around cam I have tried, good bottom, middle and kept pulling past 5,000 rpm.
I have used S&S 510 on my 96 CI and 570 on my 103.
I have just installed SE255 on my Limited and for the type of riding I do I am very satified with the results. I am seriously thinking of pulling the 510 and putting SE255 in my 96 Roadking.
Very good torque for loaded two up riding while maintaining fuel comsumption, I will go on record for much better results changing the Header pipe and cams yielded the most relavant results. Most on the board with do slip ons first which basically yeild a small HP amount but changes the looks or sound.
When you change cams do you have to add a tuner as well, or does the stock ECM automatically adjust the AFR via the O2 sensors??
You will want a download or a tuner ...then get it tuned or buy one from Fuel moto and they will pre tune it for you and it should be pretty close... I have the can map frpm FM for my set up...recently though i took my PCIII out and i am just running it wil the Stage I HD download...feels about the same to me... Tune on a Dyno by a skilled tuner would be best...
