So my 2006 EGUC has the black dull and worn factory handle bar grips.
Birthday is on the way and wife is getting me a new set of grips. Don't want heated grips. Something with chrome and black.
How difficult are they to change? I've done tires; brakes; shifter linkage upgrade and had the front faring apart to run my own iDevice cord; installed accent LEDS; battery and some other things.
So can I do this? Are there any tricks to removing the old grips and installing new ones? Will the push/pull throttle cable, EFI, be easy to adjust or it does not?
My bike's TBW, but grip swap's one of the easiest things to accomplish/upgrade. Left grip might have to be cut-off and on the Right (throttle) side - be VERY CAREFUL of the front brake switch (between lever & control cap. I put a small piece of plastic cut from old coffee can I set in recycling...use it as a "shim" to protect the switch.
If your used to wrenching it should be a snap. If the stock one's are glued (prob are) you will need to break the glue bond (left one only). If it wont let go you can run a thin screwdriver between the grip and handlebar slowly around till enough of the bond is broken so you can twist off the grip. I do not suggest you use any glue on the next set as that's 'ol school and unnecessary. Electrical tape wound around the bar (candy cane style) will be enough to hold it tight enough. The right one is done the reverse order of removal. You shouldn't have to adjust anything as your not changing any functionality of the grip just the grip itself.....hope this helps.
Right side is a little tricky on pre 08 throtle cables . It helps to loosen the throtle cable adjusters so you can get the throtle wire out of the groove. Be careful not to drop the little brass sleves that hold the wire on the grip. Also you should pull the brake handle and put a piece of cardboard in the slot to prevent breaking the switch button. Naturally you have to adjust your throtle cables, do the pull open side first making sure you get it wide open, then the return side just tight enough so it returns without binding.
Nice to report...grips are super. Can really feel a difference on rides with the wider diameter vs. the small stock grips.
I trimmed the OEM windshield and it looks great at 9" vs. the 12" height. Now I can see over it fine and it still provides nice protection on the highway with no buffeting.
PLUS got this new cover for b-day week too. My old cover was showing it's age -was not HD type but it worked. WOW, this cover is nice quality and fits very well. Hope to get many years and great use out of it.
i bent my handle bar in a slide, had to remove the left grip. brute force in twisting didn't work, wasn't going to cut it off, and soap and water only cleaned it really nice.. "GOO GONE CLEANER" worked brilliantly, worked a lil in the grip between the bar and the grip, worked it in with some air from the compressor... twisted left, right, left and it popped off no problems... will never do it any other way again..cheers
