Default Tunes for my Road King

I like many of you, really dig my bike. Over the last couple years, Ive made it mine by changing this, altering that... pretty much the norm for most of us. Havn't made any changes in awhile cause been pretty happy with er as she sits. However, I have been longing for tunes......

Never been much for the ear buds. I just can't ride with em. Ive tried multiple types. Recently I'd thought of adding an amp, & speakers. I read a lot of the threads guys put up about adding tunes to their scoots. The one thing I didn't want was, a lot of wires showing, & or zip tied to my handle bars, etc. Ive got internal wiring, & braided lines on my apes, & didn't want to "dirty em up" with wires.

Well, I finally broke down & bought a setup from Motorcycletunes. I bought a set they had on ebay with this amp http://www.motorcycletunes.com/prodd...p?prod=mt3-900, & the polk audio 4" speakers.

Best $300 Ive spent in a long time

The install was a pita.... The amp was a little bigger than I thought. I had to cut the flanges off of it. I used a hack saw for that then, filed em smooth so no burs. I crammed it in the only spot I had available, in front of the battery. Put some industrial grade velcro to keep it from vibrating. Ran the speaker wires under the instrument panel. Overall, I'd say it looks pretty clean. Only have a few inches of sleeved wire showing but, it's hardly noticeable.

I already had the plug in my saddle bag. I ran it through the side ala the HD plug/kit. I wanted the ipod to be hidden & figured it would need to charge too, as this is one old *** ipod. So I velcro'd it to the bag where it could charge. Ran a 3.5mm plug through the bag by the power plug & voila....

Have to say Im pretty impressed with this system. For $300 it really jams. I took off right after I took these pics, & was rocking out at 80mph without any problem at all

I added one of these Inav dealies.... to have a remote to change tunes/volume, etc

The Inav.. lets it charge also. Pretty slick but, admittedly.. the remote is a little difficult to use if you are wearing gloves. I could manipulate the remote fine with regular gloves but, I can see it would/will be a problem with heavy winter gloves.....

I should've taken more pics of the install but, I didn't even think about it till I was done with it. Now, I need to put all my crap back in the saddle bag, & get er out on the road tomorrow.

That's pretty cool, just the thing I was looking to add to my RK.
What was the total cost? You added some stuff, right?

It was on ebay for $309. I added a link above. I bought the Inav on ebay for $25. I also bought the tapp wire plug harness from them for $28. The plug for it was right under the seat, piece of cake. It shuts off with the bike. I already had the power plug for charging.

So, this is an amp and speakers; something you can plug your ipod device into.
What if you want to have a radio, like an FM tuner?

I don't have any desire for an FM tuner. I listen to Pandora, or Sirius. Pretty easy to listen to either of those, just plug in phone instead of ipod.

I don't remember the last time I listened to FM radio in one of my own vehicles....it's been years literally.

Nice install. And thanks for the detailed pics. Did you consider the HD Boom Audio setup? With a bit of a discount it is close to the same price and the amp is supposed to be an easy fit. Also, if you did compare, how was the audio quality between the 2?

Thanks and enjoy.

I wasn't impressed with the HD Boom Audio. It wasn't as loud, & didn't have near the bass. Seemed to be a little "cracky" at volume. Granted, you can only get so much out of 4" speakers but, I thought the Polk Audio set up I got was quite a bit better. I didn't think the HD set up would work well at highway speeds.

The only challenging thing to the install was inserting the amp into the hole in front of the battery. After I cut the flanges off, it was much easier. The rest of the install was cake.
