You have ridden it for over 4200 miles with no lockups. Now the only variable in the mix is a deer. It's always possible that at the moment you braked, there was some debris on the road which caused a loss of traction. Happens. Doubt your ABS malfunctioned, but I would certainly have it tested at the dealer to be sure. Glad you and wife are ok. Hope you were wearing some protective gear.
Completely agree ... more than likely it was something in the road that caused your patch to lose traction. Even ABS won't help you if the wheel goes canted.

If the light stays on solid I know there is an ABS problem. If all is well with the light I get the bike up to 10-15 mph and stand on the rear brake pedal. Then I turn around and get it back up to 10-15 mph and grab a handful of front brake lever. So far, the ABS has kicked in every time.
I also do this randomly a couple of times a year in a vacant portion of a parking lot .
I do the same thing regarding the light each time I take off. Admittedly, I should conduct the parking lot test more often. Great advice.
Glad you are ok. Those deer can be rough! I hope you are ready for a wait for the bike. My buddy did almost the same thing to his road king..Harley has an 8 month wait for painted tins!!!
I've had ABS release events on both my Street Glide and FatBoyLo. The system has performed as designed/advertised when the operating parameters were satisfied.
At the very least I would request that your dealer verify/confirm that the system is operating correctly. As others have suggested, perhaps you would also like to find a suitable location and familiarize yourself with it's operation and how a release event actually feels.
Glad you guys are ok. What the hell is it with the deer population explosion? I have seen more than my fair share running across the roads this year. If you hunt, shoot one for the table and one to leave in the field they are a bloody nuisance.
Glad you guys are OK, could have been a lot worse.
Hope you heal quickly and all goes well with the rebuild.

Around here the processing cost for deer has got to be so expensive that people just don't take as many deer as they have in the past.
I used to take two or three for myself and several more for friends and relatives that wanted them. In the past people would call me and request that I "get them a deer". Now nobody wants them because it cost so much at the processer.
It's to the point that now I just trophy hunt, meaning the deer (buck) I take is larger, or scores higher, than any I have taken in the past. Towards the end of the season I will take a doe or two for the freezer.

Well I hate to tell the water cooling is coming soon because on my new 2013 there are ports for water cooling on the top of the oil filter housing. My dealer said its the first one he's seen like this. He thinks it will be 2015 not 14.
