There's no way your front wheel should've locked up causing you to go down. Ice, sand, gravel, tar snake, whatever, the ABS is designed to prevent just those situations from causing lock-up and the front wheel locking up is why you went down. Take pictures of the 20 ft skidmark and hire yourself an excellent litigator.
20 ft skid marks.
Sounds like there is something wrong with you ABS. I have been on my brakes HARD in the rain and the ABS doesn't let the tires lock other than an occasional pulse when the ABS senses the wheel has stopped. Saturday I activated the ABS on both wheels in the rain and almost drifted into an intersection because of the ABS. (ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE ABS?)
I went and talked to the dealer and looked at my bike. The frame is strait it can be fixed. It needs all new sheet metal except the rear finder. I talked to them about the ABS they said it should have never locked up. The dealer said that I had a few options when it comes to fixing my bike. Option number one wait to 2 to three months to get the bike fixed or option 2 they take my bike in on trade as is plus the insurance check and I get a new bike now for about the same money they would fix my bike and sell it. This way I could get back on the road faster.
So glad you and your wife are ok. Just wrecked mine 4 weeks ago and I felt sick for a few days wondering how I didn't get hurt more and how blessed I was. Have you spoken with insurance yet, or gotten an estimate? I have progressive and they have been phenomenal.
Where you wearing a helmet and gloves? How did you guys fair-out?
My wife wasn't on when I went down, and I'm thankful for it. She doesn't have any interest in getting on now and I hope your wife finds a way to get back on the saddle. Good luck and keep us informed on the status of you and your bike.
No helmet no gloves no sleeves = lots of road rash. I have progressive I just started the clam. I never had a clam before hope it goes well. I'm glad yours is going well for you. My wife is upset with me because I'm not going to stop riding. I 20,000 to 30,000 miles a year I just can't stop. I just hope she will ride with me again someday.
I bought my latest HD for the just for the ABS specifically because of a deer strike. As far as testing ABS - its very easy to do on a gravel road with nobody around.
glad you are both reasonably ok considering! you are right, shoudln't have locked up. I've ridden many abs models, fixed bikes for friends (brakes), and tried it several ways. if you were straight, it shoulda kicked in and kept you vertical. closest I've come to dropping one was a quick test on grass with a buddies after a pad install, and that was intentional (although pretty slow), but it kicked in. Take the new bike, and get rid of the gremlins with the old!! BTW, to soon for her, she'll come around. If it's in your blood, it's likely in hers too! luck to ya Bud
The bike was brand new, I would take their offer for the trade so you can get back on the road as long as you come out even, dont let em bend you over on the deal. Whatever add ons you had on it, have em switch them out if they are still good and ride into the sunset on your new sled. OR this could be your chance for upgrades and a DIY project with the check. Good luck man.
