[quote=tekeum;11536944]No helmet no gloves no sleeves = lots of road rash. I have progressive quote]

I visit my sister and her family at least once a year in IL, and I'm always shocked to see guys riding with no helmet, no gloves, no jacket with armor, no boots, etc. I never ride w/o them. I'm sure I standout as some crazy person for all the gear I'm wearing.

Hope you will post some pics of the road rash and perhaps some other guy will take more precautions than you did. Shoot, if I wasn't worried about crashing my car or Suburban, I wouldn't buckle up, put my grandkids in the back in approved safety seats, etc., I wouldn't do it, but life often doesn't work that way.

Glad you and your wife survived; others have died under similar circumstances.

Carl

Chances are you'll be far better off getting the money from the insurance and keeping the bike. Sheet metal can be bought from a number of sources easily and quick. It really is easy to change out the fenders, tank, fairings, etc. and actually is fun to do. If you still want a new bike afterwards you'll get a much better price selling outright or trading after fixing. Another option is to take the money and sell the bikes as is. There are a lot of people that would buy a crashed bike and they actually sell for decent money. The dealer would be my last option!

Many areas are underhunted. I live in a Lake Owner's Association, no hunting. Many private landowners post their land, so might have only 2-3 guys hunting a hundred deer. Many deer hits go unreported, so problem is easy to ignore.

I read most of this thread and I see where some of you are saying that you doubt the ABS could malfunction.

Let me tell you something. The Harley ABS system is known to malfunction. I had my front ABS go out on me completely @ 1500 miles.

When I say went out, I mean it rendered my front brake useless. The front brake was stuck open and you could not apply the front brake at all. The brake lever was stiff like it was "pumped up" and it would not budge. the front calipers were stuck open.

Harley replaced the ABS modulator, it had a stuck valve. I posted about this about a year or so ago and there were several other people who posted that they also had ABS failures.

My point is, the ABS system can and does fail on some bikes. I know this for a fact because mine failed.
I will add this though, I think is is still pretty rare that one will fail but they do fail sometimes.

In may case, there were no warnings, no ABS light, no trouble codes, nothing. I just went to grab the brake and it was not there.

It was the complete opposite from what happened to you but a failure none the less.

Good luck with everything and I hope both you and your bike make a quick recovery and get back on the road soon.

As for the "Testing the ABS" ? I do it on a regular basis. I will simulate a panic stop useing the rear brake and again using the front brake.
I do the rear first just so I know the system is even working. And then the front.
Still a little pucker factor when testing the front though...........lol.

No, your ABS shouldn't let your front lock and GLAD you folks walked away.

Cheers!
