Piece of cake. Three hex pinch bolts and you're done. One for the back shifter (to get to the front shifter pinch bolt and one pinch bolt for the shifter shaft. Inspect the shaft spline for flats spots. It's a common problem and can be a real bummer on your ride to Sturgis! How do I know this??? LOL! Don't forget to use red locktite on the pinch bolts. Those babies can vibrate out too on your ride to Sturgis!
Best bet is go to store and buy a whole new shift rod. The stock ones S U C K ! I bought the cheap plain SE one, because it has the Heim joints instead of the crap stock.
nah, the shift rod itself is fine. but the rod ends do suck. i spent $8 and got a pair off ebay (seller name: racebasics), though it's been a couple of years.

Old thread, I know, but I was on a trip and one morning while I was inspecting the bike before leaving, I pulled on the heel/toe shifter and it slid right out, shift levers and shaft. The pinch bolt part of the shift arm that connects to the shift linkage had vibrated loose. I put some loctite on the bolt, realigned the shaft and tightened it down. All OK.
