I removed my cat pipe, installed a de catted pipe and re installed the pipe with the cat cause I was unhappy with the way it ran. No temp difference. The biggest difference in temps was handled with the Power Vision and Cams.

Just got a de-catted head pipe, in having worked on auto electronics with closed loop I will probably go to xieds to keep the system self educating and going closed loop at speed. The later model O2 sensors are wide range, heated and the processor is self calibrating(learns as you drive) as to needs for the engine so no remap need as instructed by a HD tech, the map will rewrite as you drive.

Techs take: swap head pipe to de-cat, run the ride on OE mufflers or the mufflers that had been on the bike for a few hundred miles(re-learn time). As the processor re-cals then add what exhaust you wish, just not open pipes like the old Boom Cans as the system needs some restriction or back pressure to let the O2 sensors work. The processor can adjust to single change variables as this over a short period of rides, it cannot adjust fast enough to do all at once or if a free flow intake installed same time and will drop fault codes if tried. Xieds after the mods will convert the 14.6:1 to 13.9:1 AFR and adjustable between by tricking the processor into seeing the data from the O2 sensors as a 14.6 ratio signal.

The tuners out there eliminate closed loop, you lose some timing, some fuel delivery adjustments for optimum ride economy and you actually lose some engine performance that has to be redialed as a map. Not my personal choice.

My ryobi heat gun showed 40 degrees difference at the 02 bung on the cat header over the same location on the vh power duals.
I noticed that the pipe cools down faster when shut off as well.
Holding that 40 degrees higher temp in the exhaust created a very warm mass of metal around the exhaust and tranny cover that the rider and passenger felt.
Nothing externally on the motorcycle got near 1400 degrees..
i have a decatted header if anyone is looking for one.

How do the manufacturers of de catted pipes get around the fact that not having a catalytic converter on a late model bike would clearly be in violation of Federal EPA laws. Evidently not many states check for catalytic convertors on motorcycles either. I have heard from several people that advised to stay the hell out of Denver, Colorado if you were passing through there with anything but stock OEM mufflers. Apparently the cops all have decibel meters and are only too eager to pay for them by nailing unsuspecting out of state riders.

I ride some with a friend that has a 2008 UC and I have 2010 FLHTK. He has the S&S 2-1-2 head pipe no cat and I have the stock headpipe on mine. Both have 4 inch slip ons and are using Power Vision mounted and monitor the temp. In the cool air we both are running around 215° when in heat they get to around 230° and 250° in town. They are usually within 2 to 10 degrees of each other. I would say the only temp difference will be in the area of the cat.
