Default FLH 1979 footboards problem

Hi.

When I bought my FLH 1979 it was a lot that was not original and the modifications was very poorly done. Brake and shift assemblies looked like crap.

I have now decided to redo everything and mount footboards.

I bought a kit from a FLH touring from 2001 in hope that with minor modifications make them fit. it turned out to not be so simple.

Because I have so much parts that are not original so I can not get the original footboards to fit either.

now everything is a mess ! I would need some help.

are a few options as I see it :

1. buy everything original from an flh 1979 (not easy to come by and not cheap)

2. try to get all my parts from 2001 to fit (would be the easiest and best, but I have no idea how to do it )

3.buy something brand new that are custom made.

would appreciate any tips and advice !

close-up pictures of both 1979 and 2001 footboards, brackets, pedals, etcetera.so maybe I can get an idea of how I should do to make it fit .

would be appreciated !

J&P Cycles will be able to provide all the parts, get their catalog, it's free, join their Gold Club. You can call The Shop in Ventura, CA, they advertise in several of the chopper magazines, they have tons of stuff.

This should not be a difficult thing unless someone has removed the fittings from the frame. In that case, I believe they manufacture replacement castings that will weld onto your frame. I don't remember if the FX and FL frames were different in terms of having the floorboard castings, but I doubt that they were. You're just gonna have to do your research, should not really be a problem these days with the net's search engine. There probably aren't gonna be too many guys on this particular forum with knowledge of what you're trying to do, most of these folks are into the modern, Twinky, stuff...

That said, there are some pretty good vintage forums out there...J&P Cycles has a good one, not particularly active but the people on it have some good expertise...ya might wanna try there, too...

Good luck...

Hi.

Thank you so much for your help ! much appreciated !

I abandon the idea of converting the 2001 to fit my 1979 I am trying to get hold of some that are bolt on instead.

I'll check J&P Cycles.

In order for stock footboards to fit, make sure you have the frame tab (for rear footboard mount) on the brake side and a tab on the primary (for rear footboard mount) on the shift side. Since it's an FLH you "should" have those but who knows what POs have done.

If you have the mounting tabs, getting the correct hardware shouldn't be to hard or expensive. I have some late model footboards.

Hi.

There was not much that was original,so I guess I have to start from scratch.
I'll post a few pictures so you can see what I have to work with.

I'm getting so tired of this footbords and I have 1000 other things to fix on the bike so I would prefer to buy everything in a kit so I just can install everything at once.

please excuse if my English is not so good and if I do not understand everything at once, I'm from Sweden.

/Johan

Your first two pics show the mounting pattern that's on all BT frames, FL or FX. The third pic shows that you do have the frame tab for mounting the rear footboard bracket on the brake side (the tab behind the one with the two bolts in). On the shifter side, you mount the rear footboard to a tab on the primary cover (that you hopefully have).

The closest thing I can find to a complete kit was in the J&P Cycles catalog under Forward Controls, titled: OEM Style Forward Control Kits for 1958-85 Big Twins.
This kit seems to provide everything EXCEPT the Footboards and Footboard Mounting brackets.

Just curious if you have any pics of what setup WAS on the bike?

Hi !

Sorry for the late reply ! thanks a lot for the information !

I looked in the J&P Cycles catalog, there were a few different options on the brake kit.

Forward Brake Kits

5400125 With chrome master cylinder, fits all 1970-E79 4-speed Big Twin $199.99

5400095 With chrome master cylinder, fits all 1958-69 4-speed Big Twin $217.99

242-086 With plain master cylinder, fits 1958-69 4-speed Big Twin $209.99

5400130 Without master cylinder, fits all 1970-E79 4-speed Big Twin $139.99

do you think I can use the brake cylinder that I have ? see the picture.
or should I buy brake cylinder also ?

Here are some pictures of what it looked like from the beginning.
