However, once you lock down the support, it's fixed. If it were to come loose, it would be banging big time. Yeah the allowable tolerances from the support to the rocker is .004-.025. This is the area some have shimmed with and without elimination of some noise. Generally they purchase some shovelhead rocker shims ranging from .005, .010 and .015 and try to get all equally as close to .004 as possible. The shims go on the non thrust side.

some of those that shimmed the rocker have since written it off as a futile exercise.
my choice was to follow a suggestion from 2010 to replace the spring for the oil bypass. since 2010 to present no more valve train sewing machine sound ticking away.

But this cheap fix is avoided by many. The theory is that the lifters are not getting enough recharge. whatever, it worked for me delivered at $20

What concerns me is I didn't have the top end noise for 20k miles and now I do.

So when I'm told "it's normal" by a mechanic, I have a hard time buying that because "normal" to me is the sound it DIDN'T made the last 20k miles, not the sound it IS making making now.

But then maybe developing a noise at 20k is normal. That's why we ask.

The noise really isn't to bad, it's more of a nuisance than anything, and really don't want to spend the money on lifters if it's not going to take care of my problem. Has anyone replaced their lifters because of the same problem that I have, and was happy that they did ? Also, has anyone put up with this noise for any amount of real time, and found out it's just that, a little noise.
Thanks In Advance Jonnierock

My engine has always been noisier than I thought it should be and the dealer techs always told me it was normal noise. After about 15,000 miles the noise was more prominent. Took it back to the dealer and they agreed to pull the lifter out to check them out. The found that the hard chromium coating on the rollers on my lifters was peeling off and that they had damaged my cams lobes as well. They replaced my lifters and cams and the prominent noise was gone but the engine is still nosier then I think it should be. I have lots of warranty left so I will just continue riding and see what happens. The engine runs great otherwise.
