I am running S&S 124 in my 06 SG -- one the best crate motors you can buy

I running an S&S 124 10.8 with 640 cam. Installed April this year and have about 12k miles on it now. It is a blast 2 up over the Sierra mountains loaded 2 up with as much power I want.

If you are more into lower rpm range the 585 and lower comp would be an excellent choice for a reliable touring bike

Just re-read the OP and you make a valid point about the tranny but later on asked questions about motor too.

I was going to buy a baker at the time I got the 124 but was talked out of it by 2 shops

What did the 2 shops say to talk you out of it? Not necessary or not reliable?

The stock 6-speed tranny is stout. My builder recommended that I run with it until it broke, which I did for over 2 years. So if you want to save some money when doing the motor build, leave tranny alone and strengthen the lower end with welded crank and Timken bearings, switch to chain drive, upgrade clutch and the compensator.

I now run a 124 motor and Baker DD7 and am very happy with set-up.

Yes, please do tell? I know that it is not necessary, but everyone I have spoke with gave it great reviews. I'm looking forward to the lower first gear and more equal distribution of the gear ratios.

I'm interested in hearing how you like the tranny.

Well heck, I know most of the stuff we put on our bikes is not "necessary" for me though it's a hobby, I like to try and make my bike like the old
six million dollar man, Better, Faster, Stronger. LOL !!!! My bike ran just fine bone stock, so yes I know, that none of my upgrades are "necessary".

I also like to do my own research before I decide to do an upgrade or modification. That's why I come to this forum. I value the opinions of actual users of a product, much more than the opinion of some so called professional shop who may or may not know anything about a product or upgrade. That being said, keep the opinions coming but just know up front I put the experience of actual users far and above those that say, such and such told me such and such.

Just an interested subscriber here, but the 7 offers the "lo hole" 1st gear and ends up the same in 7th as the stocker does in 6th right? I just read the website and they talk about basically keeping the motor in the best of the powerband, the sweet spot if you will. As broad as the powerbands are on these things that sounds like fun but only if you want to shift it because you like to shift it. Having to grab another gear surely isn't going to make it faster going in a straight line! ( Point of reference here, Coming from a 5 speed I'll go to a 6 speed when and if my 5 speed ever breaks .) Good Luck in whatever you decide to do!
