Default painted floor boards

I'm currently on my second Ultra and obviously didn't learn my lessons from the first. Let me explain. A few years into my first (1999) Ultra I discovered the bottom side of my rider floor boards had begun to rust. I cleaned them up as best I could and promised myself I wouldn't let this happen again. Now I'm 7 years into my 2007 Ultra and found the same type of rust condition. You'd think I'd learn but cleaning and polishing the underside of the rider floorboards just never made it to the top of my "to do" list. Question. Has anybody ever painted (black) the bottom of the their rider floor boards? It would seem a painted surface would hold up better and cover any of those rust scars left after 7 years of being ignored. Am I the only rider that has ignored the chrome finish on the bottom of the rider floorboards?

All suggestions are appreciated.

Unless you bead blast or sand blast the under side, the paint will never stick to the chrome. You could have them powder coated. They will sand blast them first, and mask off the top chrome.

The Undercoating's finish is durable but dirt/crud sticks to it. Powder Coating would be my suggestion.

Mine are powder-coated but I had good luck with Por-15 on my jeeps.

Eastwood also has some good stuff:

If I had to get new floorboards every seven years I would be OK with that. After 7 years the top of the floorboards are looking bit dodgy anyway.

First, automotive undercoating is porous, will mask the problem, won't cure it. The bottom of my footboards are also rusty, just one of those things, but one could take some 80/100 grit sandpaper, give the surface some tooth, spray some SEM self-etching primer on the surface (NOT primer surface, self etching primer), and rattle can over that, at least five coats, since rattle can is so thin. Then, if one wanted, one could lay on undercoating. Were it me, I'd put on Herculiner bed liner or POR15...

I'd sand blast & paint to match the bike, maybe a bit of art as most of the time there up and visible, best part is you can do it all at home.

Cheers.
