If, indeed the pump failed from foreign material their would be impact marks on the rotor.

changing pump gears on the side of the road might be an over ambitious goal being as you would have to remove cams. YMMV

Course...since it was not a part failure...but outside issues (piece floating around) that caused the issue....new pump has no warranty.

I changed the oil right before taking it out the day that it went....nothing on plug and nothing in oil...but I guess there's a billion places it could have been hiding.

Just still seems incredibly odd that both pumps took a &*^&^ starting when hot. Actually I guess I'm not sure if they are breaking when shutting off or when starting....

Since only happening since cams installed and dyno'd...good friend that is an auto mechanic hypothesized that with the increased compression on the compression stroke...when the bike is shut off...the motor is "kicking back" a bit and that "shock" from the pump going from one direction to the other might be causing it.

Seems to me if that was the case anyone that increased compression through any methodology would experience the same issues....and too many bikes out there that are cranked up.

Gonna slap new pump gears in...make sure UltraNutz instructions are followed for installation (were supposed to have been last time) and change the oil and hope for the best.

Gonna buy an extra set of pump gears....and throw a few tools in the saddlebags....not an easy side of the road fix....but better than being potentially stranded again....figure I can pick up oil to refill it on the road in a pinch...

Thanks again to all that shared info and insight.
Someone correct me if Im wrong....But Im cant remember 100% but isnt there a scavenge oil screen for that exact reason, and if it was on its way out of the oil pump that the part got "missed" the filter would have caught it. I dont buy their "thinking" .
But in all fairness I'd put money on installation error by the mech that did it, especially since it happened twice....You need to buy a Lottery ticket NOW!!!!

Default oil pump

Bagman...thanks. when switched from stock to S/E oil pump also replaced the cam plate and bolts....

Yea...when the original pump shelled we found what I thought was all of the pieces when we puzzled it back together.....

Will get her back tomorrow.....buying my lottery ticket...

Roadside not ideal....but seems like the biggest pain will be loosening up the front pipe to gain access to get the cam plate off....certainly not ideal...and praying I wont have to....but better than being stranded.

How have HOG members experiences been with tows? Was thinking of getting AAA just to be safe...but see HOG offers towing as well.....

Yeah...you can tell I am not so optimistic.

Spotted a 2010 Ultra Limited at local dealer....a 2009 Ultra with 31K and a 90 softail spinger for a 2010???? This thing grenade again and I'll have to seriously consider putting in a pump and trading it in....she's my first Harley and would hate to give her up.....but not dropping $3K to rebuild the motor on a bike with 31K. Would rather put that towards a newer one.

Enough rambling.....thanks again to all that have contributed....
