I tried my like new stock mufflers . I have a full sac true dual conversion, no cat and it sounded like a wounded cow....tried 2 different other sets of pipes....still trying..lol...
I just went through the same issue. Wanted less heat and not more sound. Ended up replacing my 2010 Ultra headers w/cats with V&H Dresser Duals, PC-V and S/E and put the stock slip-ons back on. Ran great with MUCH less heat. Just sounded horrible. Found a pair of S/E CVO take-off slip-ons (Screamin' Eagle Thunder Slip-On Mufflers-65115-10). Exactly what I was looking for. Sound fantastic and much better performance. And did I mention the heat has been GREATLY reduced. Very happy with this set up.

So yesterday I finished installing the decatted stock header and the SE Street Cannons. I'd read about these getting loud after the cat was removed but it just didn't seem like they would since they were so quiet with the cat installed - barely louder than stock if at all. Well, they ARE louder, not stupid **** off the hood loud but louder than I was looking for. I'd say similar to the Samson Powerflow 2 into 1 I had on my Dyna........which was fine as it was balanced by wind noise. Riding behind the BW fairing the street cannons are now more than I was after. Thought about changing the baffles but the end can's attach to the installed baffle. So can someone suggest something that would bring me back to just a touch louder than stock? What about the stock slip-ons..............do they flow any good or not? Here's some sound clips.
I would love to know the actual difference in decibels between the cat and no cat header for the Street Cannons. I have the Cannons on my '14 Limited and I'm trying to decide if I should replace the header pipe with one that doesn't have a cat. My indy mechanic tells me volume of the Cannons will increase 5-8% over the stock pipe with cat.

I can't quantify how much, but now I that I think about it - I may run over to radio shack and get a dB meter, doesn't cost a lot and would be a good way to compare one to another. I'd say if you like the SC with the cat and don't want much louder, you will likely not like them without the cat. Here's my advice though, keep your head pipe and modify another one. I did that and it at least leaves me the option of going back if I choose to.
