Default Putting fairing back on

Anything special I should do when putting fairing back on 05 ULTRA. I hear talk of stripping out the bolt that hold her together..How tight is good and should a guy maybe not go crazy and put on maybe some pipe tape to avoid things vibrating out or just button her up. Had it off twice as the first time I put it back together the rubber seal at bottom of head light fiot like crqap so opened it up and working that out now..Scares me to over tighten it but sure hate to see thing bounce out at 60 as well.?

Yota

Hows it goin eh? (Yeah--Im a Canuck to....)

The fairing is a snap. I like to get all 7 screws started and then go tighten them down. I use a socket with about a 6" extension and soon as the bolt gets snug-I go about 1/4 turn more. The HD spec is 25 ft lbs. Using this technique, you should be OK for years to come. During development of Ultrasound, on some days my fairing was on and off 6 times a day! At rallies, I can do 50 bikes on a weekend, and not a problem to date.

Later and hope this helps--PEZ

a quick note of experiance, put rags in the lower fork braceto prevent the Screws from falling in to the murphy holes. I also put electrical tape on the torx socket end to give it a better grip on the bolt head
Good Luck

If you remove the four main screws that hold the entire light housing and pull out the entire light assembly from the fairing and unplug the harness, you dont have to mess with the light trim ring, then the four screws that hold your bezel. Makes getting back together a lot easier and assures the lower rubber piece fits nicely and keeps your light adjustment.

if you have the passing lamps, put a old sock on each lamp before removing the outer fairing. It will allow you to rub the back of the lights without scrathing the fairing paint. This makes the removal/instllation much easier. I can take mine off in about 2 minutes...thats after dropping the under screw into the lower fork as Bushy said. BREAT idea Bushy, i will definately use that one. I leave the center windshield screw in until last just to hold the fairing inplace, and put that screw in first when re-assembly. Definately, dont completely tighten all the screws at once, loosely secure all the screws then go back and get them snug once all 6 are in place. Makes it easier to align.

I used the socks the last time I had mine off. I read about it on here and it was one of those DUH, why didn't I think of that sooner.

I've had mine off at least a dozen times in the last year.A magnetic ratchet type screwdriver works great for me. Once you get the screws to spin in freely, you will feel it tighten when it gets to the end. Snug is good. Like was said before, 1/4 turn past snug.
If it isn't tight enough, they may come loose and you may loose one. If it's too tight, you'll strip the brass threaded insert.
I prefer the first scenario.
