Default Why the hate on Harleys?

Hey everyone so I have been down the sportbike path and now thinking of the Harley side.

My dad just got a 2011 Electra Glide Classic, I rode it and wow!!!!

I loved it!!!

I'm personally looking at the Street glide, 09-11 (new frame and all the changes).

Im a small guy, 5"9 160lbs, I think I look to small on the classic lol and to big on the sportster plus I'll be riding a lot and I heard a sportster isn't the best for long trips, and no 6th gear.

I've been doing research because that is a lot of $$$$ to spend!

I see a lot of hate on harleys saying they are over priced junk and leak oil blah blah, you'll find that about any bike.

My questions are,

Have you ever had any problems with your bike?
I'm planning on putting some miles on her!

Any tips if I go to the dealer to buy, how much can you negotiate on the bike?

I hear a lot about the stage 2, does it have that big of a change? Does harley cover it under warranty if you have them do it?

Is the extended warranty worth it? Or buy private party?

I have been riding for 5+ years so this isn't my first bike.

This bike will be for cruising, going anywhere I feel like it, state to state. (thought a cruiser would be good for this instead of a sport bike lol)

Thanks everyone!

First welcome to the forum.Second most of the people that bad mouth them, they are the ones who wish they had the b@lls or the $ to buy one IMHO.I have had more problems with a Honda I had 15 years ago, than any of my HDs.

Thanks my dad has a 03 harley before this one and I dont ever remember him having a problem with it.

I know there are some D*** head harley owners but that can be said for sport bikes, muscle car owners, honda cars, etc.

You'll find a A-hole if you look hard enough anywhere.

I did read somewhere a harley owner saying he had to rebuild his motor at 20k?

Everyone that owns something else insults Harley's to justify in their minds that they made the right decision, which they did not.
I got 51K on my Road King and it's never been to the shop except for tires. They NEVER leak oil unless you take it apart and don't put it back together correctly.
Harley Davidson tourers are the Rolls Royce of motorcycles. And don't let no Gold Wing rider tell you different.

As someone else said, the one's who bad mouth them do so mostly because they can't afford one. My husband and I have had several brands through the years. Mostly Honda's and Kawasaki's, but about 17 years ago we switch to the Harleys that he had always dreamed about. Money was part of the reason we didn't have one before then. Getting married, building a home and raising a family came first and foremost for years. But like most everyone will tell you, you will not have any more problems with a Harley than you will with any other motorcycle. Get what you like and enjoy and don't worry about what others think or say. In the long run they will end up being envious of you and what you have.

Thanks that makes me feel better! I was kinda feeling iffy about getting one after reading some of that even though I thought it was BS.

Well I dont plan to take it apart until its out of warranty then I might try my hand at it, I have taken engines apart put them back together and they still ran so hopefully I can do it.

Ha funny you mention gold wing my dad had one of those to (inbetween the harleys) I rode it once and compared to the Harley it rode rough!

The goldwing was a good bike though! No problems ever.

So any advice on the extended warranty and how much I can guesstimate on negotiating if bought new?

It doesn't take any ***** whatsoever to go and buy a harley. Nor does it take much money to get a used one.

I think it's that attitude that makes some non-harley riders hate on harleys. Because SOME of the owners of harleys (not all) seem to think that their bike means that they have big ***** or lots of money and they act like douchebags.

Some "motorcyclists" don't care for the older technology, but usually someone who likes bikes doesn't really trash harleys.

I think there is a lot of attitude from both camps, but I think you will find most of the negativity coming from people with more attitude than sense (on BOTH sides) and it seems to feed itself in a circle.

This forum will give you a good idea why some people seem to trash harley davidson. Start a post about how you like, oh.... how about the Triumph Thunderbird. You'll get some people who say they agree, some who say they like it but would rather have a harley, some who will say they don't like it for whatever reason, and then you'll get a small but vocal percentage of douchebags who will trash the Tbird because, for some reason, they think anything with a saddle and two wheels and an upright riding position is a "harley copy" and for some other reason, they just like to feel cool by trashing other rides. This is a big part why there's a negativity towards harley.

But by and large, I think you'll find that most people who really like riding and really like motorbikes won't trash your bike. Most real motorcyclists who don't need a brand name to validate themselves appreciate almost all bikes, whether they would buy one or not.

Hell, this thread isn't even about OTHER bikes, and you'll note that a bunch of folks already feel the need to puff themselves up and **** on other bikes.
