With my sears jack, it seems to pick the bike up right in front of the kickstand (towards the front of the bike) and then right behind the frame where the oil pan is.

I wouldn't suggest trying to widen the pads much more. However, you might try a combination of tricks.

You have your modded jack. Try adding a 1x3 or 1x4 piece of wood on top of the pad, offset to fake widening the jack. I don't recall how deep the offset is on the frame. I'd definitely fasten the wood to the pad if possible.

btw i JUST did this last week to my jack(from pep boys i think) i have had it forever . HUGE HELP on my dyna!! the jack worked fine before for my softail and old ladys sporty but now i'm good on all bikes! thanks!!!!

 

I actually added in some 1/2" (nylon) spacers between the lift frame and pad, widening the pads +1". Should have done it sooner. Definitely sits better with the frame now.

I have not needed to use my jack in a long time until yetserday. I did the mod as described and it works almost perfectly. No more lifter blocks but the bike needs to be vertical and off the kick stand for the jack to fit. No big deal and it is so much easier now....Thanks to the OP for this.....

 

I copied Vic's parts list and did the mod today. I ended up going with 7" bolts and (2) 1/2" spacers on one side to get a perfect fit under the bike.

I spend a little more on parts with the stainless 1/2" spacers and a new cutting head for my dremel (just under $30), but got the jack on sale for $89, so about $120 altogether.

Is your bike lowered? If so, the mod won't help you there. I'm not sure I'd put the kickstand up. One of these days you're going to forget and lower the bike off the jack and .......

I will post some pictures tonight, but I am still having issues with my bike. It has about a half inch spacing on each side. I think I am going to go 1" on the front. I used 7/16" hardware, but that shouldnt be an issue. Damn bolt where the jack pad bolts to the lift arm, the head of it is hitting the front kickstand bolt on stud thing. Ill get a picture. I am thinking some 1x2 wood plastidipped and bolted to the pads may be my next move if more spacers don't help. But the jack pad isnt what is hitting, its the bolt head inside the lift arm. Do you guys thing more spacing in back will help???

 

Just did this mod to a new yellow Harbor Freight jack and it works like a champ. I put four 1/2" washers between each arms and the pads (16 total all around) with 5" grade 8 bolts. I butt the jack up against the jiffy stand and go to town. Feels pretty darn stable to me and I've got about $70 total in it. I used it yesterday to take off my front wheel to sand and polish my front fork tubes. I also need a new front tire and my local indy charges $25 mount and balance if you bring in the wheel vs $45 if you have them take the wheel off. Saving already because of it.

 

I am thinking you are doing something wrong if your bike doesn't fit with only Vic's mods.
