So, with my metallurgy background, I read that to say the base material isn't as strong so they surface harden, vs. a material that is strong all the way through and doesn't need surface hardening.
I can't say for sure because they don't say what their material is, but the statement leads me to think they selected a cheaper alloy to surface harden. Carburizing is an old, cheap way to surface harden. Most surface hardening has been induction for the past 40 years.
You might want to ask. I might perform just as well. For $400 I'd want to know.
Once you find the cam that has the best sound, dont forget to get these spiffy biker boot straps so's your biker pants look really cool while riding. When you pull into the rally everyone will be so envious.
I don't want to take this thread off the rails any further than I already have, but.... Thanks to those who've provided compensator info. Mine has just started making a bit of noise while idling, and I might not even get to it for several months. I have decided against eliminating it, and I'm not going with the Man of War, so an upgraded part with better metallurgy is what I'll eventually be shopping for.
We could start a whole thread on 107 versus 114. I have read that the actual riding difference is pretty minor. If I had to replace my bike today I would be shopping for a lightly used 107 for the cost savings. I am sure it would respond well to some power upgrades as experienced by several members here. It wasn't all that long ago that the first twin cams came out with an 'massive' 88 cubic inches.
sounds to me like the idle is too high. but the 30 30 cam is the go to cam for me. get up there in cams better change out the springs in the clutch. and doing that depending on how tight the springs are you have to worry about the clutch cable, you know the plastic holding it all together. switch to the fat baggers replacement and do away with the harley setup.
