i typically ride 25 miles each way to work everyday, I did a few easy 80 miles rides this summer but I ran it really hard for 140 miles yesterday and it was hot, 95 degrees.
anyway, got home and noticed some transmission oil spattered on the upper belt guard and left passenger peg and back of primary housing, I let it sit overnight and found a couple golf ball sized sports of oil under it, I assumed its leaking somewhere behind the primary where the belt pulley goes into the transmission.
and hoping it just got a little too hot yesterday and I won't have problems with it everyday,.,,
any way I added an ounce of blue devil transmission stop leak to it, it's guaranteed to work so i'll find out.
anybody have a guess on what exact is leaking and do you think stop leak will work? probably a main seal where the drive shaft goes into the transmission?
From: Depends on who wants to know.........and why.
No leaks on my used 10 year old SB yet, but if it does leak, depending on the intensity of the leak and what it would take to fix it, I might just let the sumbitch leak.
If for sure a transmission leak, I would be hoping it was a shifter shaft seal issue - would not be hard to replace. I agree with SixDD, probably no need to fix right away, maybe think of something else to do at the same time to make the effort worth it, like maybe a 30T if you want.
If you do some more investigating, you probably will be able to see if it is the shifter shaft seal or not.
good news is I've rode it 2 days to work now and it hasn't leaked anymore.
yep, definitely wouldn't fix it right away, wait for when the clutch goes bad or something like that. Actually I remember now that the shifter seal was replaced once on this bike around 15,000 when I bought it, dealer had to put in a new stator too.

check the lower trans cover bolt on the right side. Especially if your exhaust uses one of those bolts to hold the hanger. They will loosen over time. Usually on my FLHTK by the time I need an oil change. I had to cut off an Allen wrench to fit between the exhaust and trans cover. May not be the problem but it only takes a minute to look.
what's the worry about stop leak? I'm curious to know.
thanks
If that bolt is coming loose stop leak may stop the leak but having that bolt eventually fall out can't be fun.
My opinion on stop leak? That's what shady car dealers put in the engine to stop the leak long enough to sell the piece of junk.
Either fix the problem or get someone to fix the problem. The trans is not supposed to leak. So if it does there is a problem. Running your trans out of oil is probably not a good thing.
I've found if the trans. is filled to the full mark and ridden real hard on a hot day (OP example) some oil may vent from the tube that runs across the top of the tranny to the belt side. Sometimes a mud dauber wasp will make a home in the tube and prevent the venting to a point.
