They do not work well at all on the Twin Cooled bikes. The water pump blocks the air flow to them.
Won't it still suffer the same reduced cooling effect when the bike's not moving, i.e. stuck in traffic (when its needed most) as other passive coolers, vs. active (fan assist) units like that version Jagg or Ultracool? Or is the increased surface area of the oilbud enough to let convection do the job?

From what I have read they work like a heat sink and are not wind dependent

They do not work as well when stopped or going slow as the Fan-Assisted Oil Coolers.

From our testing they do provide some cooling benefit, acting as a heat sink, but the wind is definitely a needed factor for them to provide significant cooling.

Yes, that is why we tested it. In the end, the cost, the not so easy install, and the just ok cooling benefit did not justify the hidden aspect for us. BUT, everyone is different in their priorities, AND they seem to have good resell value. We sold our test unit on ebay for just a few dollars less than we paid for it.

Default Very helpful information

Just read all 15 pages of this thread. I will be watching and reading to decide what I want to do to cool down my Road Glide a bit. I will be installing Mighty Mites or fan assisted oil cooling depending on which seems to be the most cost effective option to gain some cooling. I do appreciate all of the research and comments.

Default Great link to article on cooling Harley

Hi,
Just ran into a great article on oil temp, head temp and exhaust temp controls on a Harley. The writer ( actually Wards) had sensors installed in the heads and was running air assisted oil cooling and fans on the jugs. Pretty interesting reading if anyone is still following this thread.

Few random thoughts

(1)

My goal - get the temp reading results / deltas - right...., not fast = what the hell ever "right" turns out to be

Maybe this set up works for cooling.., maybe it doesn't

Maybe I needed additional cooling..., maybe I didn't

I dunno at this point..., but I will

=====================

(2)

Riding every day..., even a couple of runs thrown in

I've been checking oil temp periodically (with the cooking thermometer)

That got to be such a PITA - I went ahead and bought / installed an oil temp dip stick

So far..., while in TX - oil temp has never went north of 205 - which IMO - ain't hot

==========

BTW:

I did say I would keep my dumb *** opinion out of this thread...., and I also stated I would not buy a temp gauge

So now..., and at this point - I've lied about both of those two

==========================

(3)

Until it gets consistently hot enough (air temp wise) - causing the oil temp to get to 220..., or above

Any numbers I post would be (IMO) useless

When it cool (air temp wise) - obviously there no need for add'l cooling

When it hot (air temp wise) - there is (or at least - there may be)

It's when it's hot (air temp wise) and oil temp wise - with the stock set up...

That I'm most interested in

That I'm targeting / testing / reporting..., so other's can make an informed decision on whether add'l cooling is warranted..., or simply bullshit and a waste of good money

=============

(4)

When this thread was most active - there were a few other "cooling" threads fired up

Not interested in the bullshit drama (and frankly it bores the hell out of me)..., only interested in results

Factual..., solid - results..., derived by a methodological / repeatable approach

==============

Maybe I've wasted some money..., and all of our time - I dunno

But once it gets consistently hot around here - we damn sure all will

================

I will post up some numbers - that is unless I'm killed or busted between now and then - and let the chips fall as they may

Just a little more patience (please) My Man

Jun / Jul / and hotter than hell Aug is right around the corner

eta

I've had to change my oil - still runnin the stock set up..., w/ a stock oil filter - for the initial temp baseline

Point 2 - 205 oil temp isn't good imo. That means its not getting hot enough to boil out the water that accumulates in it. With my kit (Ultracool) Love Jugs, tune, my oil temps seem to directly coincide with my PV reported engine temps. I'm averaging about 230-240 ET and same, maybe slightly lower oil temp.

FWIW, I'm good with those numbers. Real or not, it's better then the 300's my PV used to report last summer.
