No sweat, sir. I'm fully in your camp: data talks, bullshit walks. All in due time.

While out on a 80 mile run yesterday, temp at 88 fh I came up with the following temps. First temp just off the slab oil was 215 that was 35 miles. Second stop rural roads back home temp 220. My free system seems to doing the job. Granted big city traffic would produce higher numbers. I seldom go to the big city, totally surrounded by small towns. My system

I can add some recorded data as well. Yesterday, on my Low Rider Special, 110 motor with Ultracool oil cooler, 3guyz filter relocation kit and a wards fan. Outside temp was 86 when I left.

Initial reading after 40 min of mixed highway and rural roads (not much stop and go) with the wards fan running full time, showed a PV engine temp of 249 and an oil temp of 247.

I then shut the fans off and turned around for the same route home. The engine temp fluctuated between 265 and 285 depending on movement speed. At the end of the run the oil temp was 269.

So it's clear to me that the engine cooling fans have a direct effect on both engine temps and oil temps.

Note oil temp readings were from the HD electronic dipstick, so while accuracy may be in question, the differentials are what mattered for this test.

God only knows what these motors and their oil goes through in stock form, but I'm good with the temps I'm seeing from this furnace and the add-on's I've installed. No more worry of getting stuck in traffic or cooking my oil it seems.

Interesting to see the differences between the temps on the two bikes above...I know they are different displacements (and probably compression ratios), but both are TC's.

Doesn't surprise me at all. My Road Glide with a 103HO shows similar oil temps, ~225 all day.

Since day 1 the 110SE motor has run hotter then hell. Hotter motor=hotter oil makes perfect sense to me.

Still, ~250 deg oil doesn't bother me, in fact I prefer it to 220 deg oil. Remember, water only boils out at 212deg, so you want it hot enough to do that pretty reliably.

I always understood conventional oil optimal operation temp range of 220-260 and full syn exceeding 300deg (that's normal operating temp, not max temp for brief periods). Hell, good 'ol Mobil 1 says it protects up to 500deg (that's all Fahrenheit for our metric friends)

So me and my red line are fine with those numbers.

Curtis has deleted his personal attack, so I've also deleted my, uhm, rather pithy response.

Okay..., game on

I think any one would agree - this the hot part of the year..., only getting hotter - and when any add'l cooling would be needed the most / most beneficial

Tried to base line yesterday - it was overcast most of the day - oil temp never exceeded 250

Hit it again today - again overcast most of the time - OT never got above 250

** As measured by the oil temp gauge - not the cooking thermometer

==============

Supposed to be mid / high 90s over the next week or so.., not overcast..., and w/ August approaching - only getting hotter (just what the doc ordered)

Just to level set..., the plan

1.) base line stock configuration oil temp

2.) test w/ reusable / finned - billet oil filter

3.) test w/ oil filter and oil cooler (measure/ record the add'l oil it takes to fill system)

4) all of #3.., plus fans

5.) see how much..., if any..., benefit - there is

======================

Oh..., and for anyone still wondering why this taking so long

Had I base lined at lower air temps - then compared the adds ons at higher air temps - it wouldn't be comparing apples to apples - so any data collected would've been useless bullshit

Started at 1200 hrs today

Rode to a dealer (getting stuff rounded up to add a second front brake - but that another story)

From there:

13:30 hrs

Checked the official air temp - 99 degrees

1st hr spent on slab - 65 + mph - max oil temp attained = 250-ish

14:30 (thereabouts) to 17:00

Hit secondary roads..., some stop N go..., hills..., some blacktop..., some concrete..., also stopped and let the bike idle for ~ 5 min in the sun

Highest oil temp attained = 265 degrees

Burned through a tank and a half of fuel

========================

Data point 1: Baseline

Stock config = Air temp 99 degrees..., Highest oil temp - 265 degrees

=====

Been hydrating / grabbing chow since

Heading out in a bit to change oil and install the reusable oil filter

Data point 2 - pending

Got pics if you need proof - otherwise - calling it good

==========

Now who's the F'n idiot...,who signed up to do this testing in the heat of the summer anyway - LMFAO
