Default Progressive 440 HD on a Street Bob

I just bought a set of 11.5" 440s for my '06 Street Bob and installed them tonight. But I pulled them off after 28 miles and went back to the stock HD shocks! The ride seems excessively firm even adjusted all the way soft (I'm over 240). Do you really loose that much ride going from 12" stock to 11.5"? What am I missing?

I have the stockers set at 3 and they are absolutely smooth and handle great even on bumpy roads. From what I've read here and elsewhere, the 440s are the ultimate for ride quality. Are the springs geared mostly towards 2-up riding? Any other Street Bob (or solo seat Dyna) owners have experience with the 440 or 440HD?

I heard the heavy duty Progressives were more for 2-up riding. Maybe return them for some standard duty ones? Hopefully that will help. I am thinking of 11.5" Progressives when I get off this deployment but this has me second guessing that idea. Keep us informed.

Original Junior: I wish I could swap them for standard duty. But they (American Classic Motors) don't accept returns. In fairness, this is stated in their sales policy. That's probably not a problem for most items. For something like shocks (really the SPRINGS moreso than the shock aborbers) you can't really test it until after the fact. These things are quite a bit more expensive than the 412s & MBs. So I expected them to have a correspondingly better ride quality. And maybe they do when riding 2-up or if you're over 260lbs.

Anyone interested in a brand new set of Heavy Duty 11.5" Progressive 440s? Only 28.5 miles on them!

Progressive will put the standard springs on for you, or you can do it yourself. Obviously it will cost you some, but its not bad. I've considered doing it, I just haven't settled on it yet.

I have the progressive 440's on my 04 Lowrider. and yes the ride is a little firmer. However, gone is the waggle in the rear when cornering, especially in those long sweeping curves. Also when in a highspeed turn it feels as if the bike just sucks down closer to the road. If most of your ride is on the interstate then progressives may not be the best choice, I think air shocks would do best here. But, if you run the twisties...........

Well since you can't return them maybe they'll soften up a bit as you ride why not try and put them back on and do a bunch of two up riding to break them in.

You seemed to really like the stock ride. Why did you change out the shocks then? If your ride was absolutely smooth and handled great why mess with a good thing?

Ok maybe gain some weight, that'll work.

I have progressive 440's 12 1/2" HD, I love mine. Rear always feel's planted and I don't mind a slightly stiffer ridewhen it equates to more control. I'm about the same weight as you and solo most of the time, but it's when the wife is on back that I really appreciate 'em. You might want to put 'em back on and give a little more of a work out before you sell them, or call progressive and ask their advice. Peace.
