I'm having a very hard time finding the right pipes for me. I love the look of the V&H short shots, but from the softail that I heard them on, and the couple videos on youtube, they sound a bit 'raspy' and didn't sound all that great. So I'm a bit hesitant about those..
I've heard the bassani's are fairly loud, but they don't come with heat shields, and I don't have the extra money to spend on them. And I'm not sure what sort of performance gain you get with them so I'm not sure about those either..
I may possibly have a deal with a set of V&H big radius 2 into 1, but I'm not sure what sort of sound they produce. I know you get good performance out of them, which is what is making me lean a bit more towards those pipes, but I'm not sure how they sound. I ride with a lot of people so having loud pipes is a must as I can't stand not being able to hear myself. I want a nice, deep but loud rumble.
So I guess the point of this post is, can anyone give me suggestions? My budget is around $450 at the most. So please, HELP ME!!This is driving me crazy..

Have you heard the V&H Short Shots with Quiet Baffles? I'm running them and the baffles aren't any 'quieter', just deeper and seem to do away with the raspy sound of the standard baffles (pretty much anyway). Something to think about since you said you already like those pipes and can be had pretty reasonable.

I bought a set of joker machine 2's for my fxr, they were designed for a softy. I aint much on chrome stuf. A acetolene torch, a large pipe, a vise...and some bbq black spray paint work wonders.

If you want a more "throatier" sound then you may want to look into a set of Staggered Rineharts. I put these on mine because I too wanted this same sound and thought the V&H were a little to raspy sounding (nothing against the pipe). Not sure if they do a slip on though. Listen before you buy though!! Hit the Bike Nights, etc. I've seen guys that dyno'd the pipes too b/c many pipes will rob HP/Torque (advantage of having a buddy w/ his own shop). Worse thing to do is buy any pipes and have to listen to them when you don't like them. Ask the Screamin' Eagle guys! My Girlfriend bought Screamin' Eagles for her "07 Lowrider and hated them. Lasted a week and that was it!Good luck!

Thanks for the responses!
Strengthin1: I would love nothing more then to buy some rineharts, but at $850 for a set, I think I'll have to pass. I don't have that sort of money unfortunately.
Thanks 1yrb4hd. Thats quite a bike you have there.
And I think the V&H shorshots with the quiet baffles is an option. That may be the way to go. Thanks for the input chipstah.
I guess we'll see what happens. I'll give it more thought and hit up the bike night tomorrow. Any other opinions/suggestions?

I went with the V&H 2-1Pro Pipes. Great sound, not the harsh, raspy, but a low rumble. Happy with the performance, too.
Best deal I found was with Eastern Performance Cycles (Forum sponsor): $414.00 including heat shields and shipping.

I just put on Rush slash down slipons and am very impressed. Here is something interesting though. The sound changes depending on how your bike is tuned. I have a carb. and upon 1st installing them I did about 80 miles on the pipes with the stock air cleaner and jetting with the air/fuel adjusted 2.5 turns out. Ran a little lean. So sunday bought the stage 1 air kit and installed with a low speed rejet from 45-48. Bike runs amazing and the exhaust became deeper with a smoother roll back from coming off the throttle than they sounded before the air mod.
Point is that the tuning of your bike will affect the sound a little bit as I have experienced. The leaner condition sounded raspier(is that a word?) than my more properly set up fuel air mixture.

Interesting point. I had my pipes and carb put on at the same time, kept the SE filter, and the low speed jet is a 50. Sounded great from the get-go. A little louder than the SE-11's, but still with that deep rumble.

I just put on V & H Bigshots and am very happy, they sound awesome, nice and loud, as we all know
"loud pipes save lives" Plus they look great, was going to go with the shortshots as they are quite cheap compared to the rest but ended up going with the bigshots, easy to install too. Got mine from Eastern Performance for $460, ended up $740 with shipping and exchange rate to Australia but still saved $400 by buying them over in the US.

Good lookin machine gibs.
Have you considered HOGRIDA's lay down plate bracket??
That standup license plate caused me to build a complete new fender.
But the HR laydown is a real nice add to the stock fender.
