Default 05 superglide tank options

I have seen posts with people putting st. bob tanks on their 06 and later superglide. But what about the 04-05's? I thought I read thata wide glide tank would fit or a lowrider tank would fit, but I really don't need a tach. Sorry for stupid questions. I am trying to just get my speedo on the tank, and yes I should have boughtst. bob, but I didn't.Trading mineright nowis notan option with a baby on the way. I can live with a chrome housing on the bars but just wanted my options to be open. Thanks

We put an '01 FXDWG tank on my brothers '01 FXD; the more "swap meet" stuff you use, the less it's gonna cost but there's a bit of re-wiring involved.....

My guess....is that you might have to mess around with the mounting brackets a little to get it to fit on there. I am REALLY interested in this...might have a go at it myself. The gauge on the risers has always been a sore point for me. It's one of the reasons I went with 13" apes instead of 8- inch risers and a drag bar instead. Now....I like my apes, but still interested in this. Being that '06 newer bikes are Fuel Injected, it might make it a little easier. If you have a Fuel injected bike, better make sure the tank has the provisions for Fuel Injection.

An FXWG tank from 04 or 05 should bolt on. You have a mount bolt tab at the back (seat) end of the tank...I put an '04 tank on my '01; had to drill and tap a hole...

as mentioned, 2004-2005 model tanks will fit on your SG without modification.

2 options you might consider:

Wide Glide tank. This is going to end up costing a few $. You need the tank - then need to remove the fuel pump from your tank and put it in the WG tank - not too bad yet. Problem is that the WG speedo is different, so you have to replace it or find an adapter for the hole. You will need to buy a WG dash and all of the misc stuff associated with that, not sure how the wiring would go - but it may involve a new connector or 2.

Low Rider tank. Same issues with fuel pump and purchasing the dash and misc parts. The benefit of this is that you can reuse your speedo - the problem is that the dash has 2 holes - speedo and tach. So you have to buy a tach ..... maybe. If you buy a tach - then what will you do with the idiot lights?? An alternative might be to not buy the tach and then fabricate a nice bezel and plate for the "tach hole" and then put your idiot lights there????? Might work out OK? Don't know?

I thought for a while that I would go with one of these options - however the cost and effort seems significant.

The guys with 2006+ models have the St Bob tank option, which may also be the same tank as the 2007+ FXDC? This is almost ideal because the speedo works and the idiot lights are on the dash.

Good Luck.
