Just got back from the dealer who put on the new detachable saddlebags on my '07 Street Bob. I noticed that the chrome cover was missingover top of the shock where it bolts into the fender. Dealer stated that the hardware that is installed for the detachable saddlebags does not allow for the chrome cover to be put back on and the saddlebags did not come with any chrome to cover that area. I think this is BS. Does anyone have these bags on their Dyna and have pics of the shock area that would show if there is a chrome cover over that area. Thanks
I also have the detachable bags. i installed them myself. I agree that they look strange without the caps (exceptally with the stock shocks) that is why I used the origionalcaps untill I buy new shocks.
I had mine installed at the dealer in JAN.08,I'm not sure what cap you are talking about, but the new shock bolt is not chrome like the original.Ask the dealer to return all your stock parts that were removed that wayyou will know for sure if he is right.
When I installed my saddlebags, 90460-06, unto my 07 FXDC, the instructions indicated that the chrome cover should be discarded, but it did not look right so i just left them on with no fitment issues to speak of.
It's possible that yours could work with the chrome covers as well.

Thanks for all your comments. This is what I did. I called H-D customer service and they investagated the situation with the cover and why they would leave the shock looking like that. They stated that it is stated in the directions to discard the cover but they could not understand why. They engineering department stated that its a design flaw that they need to resolve. Until they redesign the cover to fit the new bracket desigin I am stuck with what I got.
As usual I had the dealer give me all the old parts. I took the two covers and matched them up to the new bracket area and looks like to me that they could be mounted. The cover just won't hit the side of the strut. No big deal atleast it will chrome that area out somewhat. Now the problem is pulling the bolt out and sliding the cover on. It states to tourqe the bolt to 75-85 ft-lbs. I not sure what this means and how hard is it to get to the nut that the bolt connects to. When i remove the bolt will the shock be affected? Help!!!!!!!!!!!
You should be able to remove/install the shock cover w/o disturbing the shock, just unscrew the acorn nut and put the chrome cover on, replace the nut, it should take about 2 mintues. Make sure you use a torque wrench to get the nut tightened to the recommended range in the service manual.
When you say acorn nut what you meaning. What acorn nut?
Here is a pics of my bike before the bags. I will get some of the shock area tommorow and add.
