Vic, when you read the customer reviews for this jack there are several complaints of leaking hydraulic jacks and poor customer service. Have you experience this? How about anyone else?
I've had mine for about five years now, and no problems yet.
Great mod. Did mine 2 weeks back. Cost me 60 bucks for the jack off craigslist and $10.58 in hardware, and about 10 minutes start to finish to mod. I've used it twice already and so far so good.
macnab: Looks like mine. No worries. Easy controllable lowering speed. Smooth.
The front bolt is turned opposite for clearance at the jiffy stand.
I know why you put the spacer in there, I also used some spacers just to make things quicker. But, I would lose that long spacer and go with a 1/2" spacer on each side. That long of a spacer and you are going to have problems later on as it weakens the mounting area and bolt.

You think so? The pads (C-frame) look pretty beefy and also looks like grade 8 hardware. It would make sense to put 1/2" spacers at all 4 corners to keep it symmetrical to distribute the weight equally so the jack doesn't become unstable.
Rich, I'm fairly certain I used just a standard bolt which I am fairly certain is grade 2. I did look for G5 or G8 but my lil smalltown hardware store doesn't have a huge selection. Lowe's is about 40min drive one way. I just didn't feel like taking that drive. Next time I'm in that area I may just get some grade 8 bolts, also for just a little insurance.
There does seem to be a good bit of metal to deal with. If someone was concerned with a 1/2" bolt not carrying the load, I didn't see a problem with drilling the existing holes to 9/16". Now if that can't hold a ~700lbs motorcycle, I don't know what will.
A Grade 2 Bolt 3/8" diameter has a shear strength of 830 lbs on the bolt body and 510 lbs at the thread root. A 1/2" Grade 2 bolt is 1470 and 940. Per bolt.
I think you're safe.
Sears has that jack on sale through today, online. Seriously considering it.
Grendel, there are better jacks out there but to be honest after performing this mod I'm pretty satisfied with the $120+$10 I spent on this jack so far.
From previous posts, don't lose your receipt incase the seals go bad.
