The HID has been acting up and I decided to solder all the connections and see if I could get it to work better today. So... soldered all the connections that were done with butt connectors prior and put it all back together. When it works it works great but it does not alwyas work. It has also started to trip my check engine light. After reading a bit it seems it is a voltage draw for the ballast that is causing the engine light to come on. That is not as big of a concern as is the light not alwyas coming on as I need it to work for ding in the dark. So I tried a different ballast and bulb, same problem. I then noticed that this setup does not have a relay on it and it seems some that you can order do. Maybe adding a relay will cure this problem?

Regardless, when i was riding with the light and it was working people noticed me much quicker than with the regular headlight, that is a fact. I can see better in the dark as well.

I got a new black headlight bucket with black trim ring from drag specialties ($49) since I was going to be taking this all apart again. The headlight no longer sticks out of the fairing like the other light did. One problem solved. Now to figure out this HID thing as I really like having the super bright light.

Can anyone shed some light? I have googled and read all kinds of things and it seems getting a relay is the way to go for this as the power flow will be regulated with the use of a relay. There are HID relays that come ready made but I cannot find one local so I will order one and see what happens. My fear is that the light will stop working in the dark somewhere. It seems I can mess with the switches for a while and eventually it will come back on but that is a serious hassle to have to do.

My new pegs finally arrived. I am sending them off the Kevin at DK Customs (Thanks) and he will adapt them for my bike. I could have bought these at $150 a set from low brow customs but this way the total cost for each set is less than $50. Well worth the added wait time. These Primo pegs are heavy. We'll see how long till they get scraped up. I'd do some pics but I'm sick as a dog as I have been for teh last week.

So back to the initial question...any help with the HID issue? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Your ballast may be overheating under your seat. A buddy of mine has an issue with his HID on his Street Bob. If he is riding for a while then makes a short stop (like to get gas or something), when he turns the bike back on the bulb does not always turn on, he will have to cycle the ignition several times. We are thinking it is a heat issue. I installed an HID on my T and I put the ballast in the faring, mine is not giving me the problems that his is. I too want to get a new headlight assembly though, I do not like the light pattern on the road that comes from the older headlights.

I redid the HID with a relay that runs directly to the battery, power on is the low beam, and the high beam turns it off. I switched everything around, tried all the different extensions, ballasts, etc that I have. Finally after for what seemed like forever it started working good.

I then decided I was going to put the ballast under the fuse box cover until I realized that there is not a good way to run the wires into that area. Back to the original plan which is to stuff it under the seat along with the relay that I put together.
Here is how the relay is run.

The yellow power wire goes to my low beam power and nothing else is plugged in in the headlight as I grounded both parts under the seat.
I zip tied the two connectors for headlight power together and then covered them with some rubber boots that I had laying around. I am yet to ride it as it is a rainy day here but I guess I will see how it goes tomorrow. As far as the heat is concerned from being under the seat, I had not considered that. The other thing that was brought to my attention was the fact that the ballast is DC as opposed to AC. Lots more things to try if this does not work out but I am thinking it will.

Rough test fitting

Relay with an insane mess of wires

Neatly zip tied in place (neatly for me)

It is funny you mentioned that your check engine light started coming on, now that I think about it, so did mine, my set up is a little different though. I got a dual bulb that had a halogen high beam with HID low beam so that I could use the factory headlight bulb connection right to the HID bulb connector and not have to tap into any wires. I had pulled the code but cannot remember what it was at this time. I cleared it by disconnecting the battery, but have not really had a chance to ride it since due to it getting cold here and I haven't had time to ride with my daughter only being a few weeks old.

I ordered some plug in from ebay that is supposed to take care of the code too, we'll see what happens. I assume it is a voltage issue for the code. If I didn't have to count flashes of the headlight I'd have the code now but I also disconnected my battery today so we'll see if the engine comes back on.

Thanks Cap'n. The pegs are here. I thought I'd throw a few pics up as there are not nearly enough pics on this page.

Here is the HID in the early morning daylight. It's pretty darn bright. I still need a diamond cut reflector. Anyone have a spare harley headlight or reflector (5 3/4") laying around? I don't know what year they started using these but I am thinking 05 or so.

Thoughts? I don't care that it is not DOT legal. They can pull me over and I will gladly explain that it is better than getting run over.
