Default TC88 Oil Pump O-Ring Question - How many ?

Last weekend I removed the cam plate assembly for a cam chain tensioner replacement project on my 2001 Ultra.

There was a black O-ring placed on the oil pump spigot, please see pic. There was also a yellow O-ring (part # 11293) inserted in to the cam case where the oil pump spigot plugs in. So, there were two O-rings installed. However, the parts manual indicates just one-ring at this location (part # 11293), and the dealership parts person assures me that just one O-ring is correct.

Question – How many O-rings should be installed … one or two?

As always, thanks in advance for your assistance.

The OEM parts/service manuals are, of course, correct; the yellow o-ring is the correct o-ring and there is only one. However, adding an o-ring to improve the seal between the scavenge port and pump spigot is a little "hack" that has been practiced for years to mitigate against sumping. I use the o-ring that seals the oil pan drain plug, PN11105; it has to be stretched to fit over the pump spigot but is effective in achieving the intended purpose. Your call if you want to continue the hack but if you do, suggest you use the 11105 o-ring. If the second o-ring is too big, it could contribute to sumping.

To add a little bit of info.. For the O ring to crack, it saw too much temps for the O ring. It was likely a Buna-n/Nitril O ring. They can only handle temps up to 250F. The Yellow HD O ring is Viton and can handle temps up to 400F. Someone installed the wrong O ring..

Thanks for that tip. Yes, the O-ring was very brittle and broke when I removed it. No evidence that anyone else has been inside this bike but somebody apparently was. Previous owner is deceased so I can’t ask him about it

Just use 1 yellow o-ring. Lubricate it, and insert in into the case bore - you will feel the pump plug firmly into it. I have seen more people mess it up by installing the o-ring on the pump snout first and cutting it or otherwise damaging it.

That's why I use the oil drain plug o-ring 11105. It is viton and much smaller in diameter and thinner than the broken one in the photo you posted. It has to be stretched over the pump spigot. I install the 11293 yellow o-ring in the scavenge port bore but slip the 11105 o-ring over the pump spigot. Makes a nice tight seal that will mitigate against sumping by tightening the seal of the 11293 o-ring; no downside to the practice.

S&S has black orings in their cam install kits. They are Viton. Same can be said of cometic. The yellow one comes from Harley and is just a coating. Color does not dictate material.

That is correct. The yellow coating adds in preventing damage upon install. I have black and yellow still in the toolbox and still use both - just need to lube properly and install carefully. I said use the yellow one because I was referring to H-D kits.

All,

Once again thanks for your info and tips. At the beach this weekend but plan to begin putting things back together when I get home.
