Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
Hopefully this is a quick & easy question - I'm working on an '01 Sporty, and I'm hoping someone can tell me what bolt is supposed to go here at the base of the cylinders. Is this just an engine case bolt? Hoping someone has the spec or part number.
Not the timing plug kiddies, that's a case bolt. Later models don't have timing plugs.
Not kiddies -
it would be a timing plug for us old guys...not sure when HD deleted a basic timing requirement...
OH!
That's right, when they invented the trouble-free computerized BS that never fails!
just for the record, the 01 xl platform does indeed have a timing plug and hole, it's on the cam side in between the pushrods, the OP however is indeed looking for the center case bolt.

i'm pretty sure that HD didn't do away with the timing hole untill they went to the crank pick up sensor on the 04 and later stuff.

It is a case stud and I believe the part number is 42449-89a. If you just go to your local dealer he will have it. I would also use the flanged lock nuts on each end...
