Default Cruise Control Problem

97Ultra

The other day I tapped my rear brake to shut off cruise control, only it didn't shut off.

Today I checked to see if the rear brake switch is working, and it seems to be, or at least the brake lights are working.

Cruise shuts off fine when front brake applied.

Any one have any ideas what the fix , or problem might be?

Thanks

John, there are many pages in the FSM about diagnosing cruise control problems. They are the best way to deal with issues, clear and easy to work through.

My '94 is a little different than a "97 but in my manual there's a section that walks you through with a flow chart.

That being said when mine would cut off intermittently I traced every wire, checked continuity and tested over and over without passing the cruise check. I gave up and put it back together. In the spring it worked fine. It can be a real PITA to diagnose.

Good luck on your journey.

Works fine with the front brake...doesn't work with the back brake, but the brake lights work...it is almost a given that the wire from the back brake switch to the module has a bad connection or is broken.

Got a schematic? In General, every other cruise control on every other automotive application only taps into the brake light circuit. I doubt HD did it differently. So, if you "tapped" the rear brake, did the rear brake light actually come on? You know that is a pressure activated switch, so a light tap that doesn't build sufficient pressure to activate the switch will not turn that circuit on. Try it again and don't "tap" the brake, like you would on a car (which typically use a mechanical switch like your front brake, not a hydraulic switch like your back brake), but stop on the rear brake hard and see if it goes off.

Yep brake light comes on.
I could feel the bike working against the rear brake ,, if it was working it should have activated I'm sure.

Not necessarily. With the front brake, the light comes on before the brake starts working. With the back brake, the brake starts working before the light comes on.
