Ultima 107" motor on a 90 model Bagger
How much clearance should I have between the bottom of the tank and the throttle lever on the HSR 45? I know we had at least 1/8" and the tank still hit it today and it broke it off, making the return throttle cable worthless. I found a site that had them for $16.00 so it's not a really big deal, just that I don't think I can get the carb any lower and still be able to put in the breather bolts.
thanks in advance
joe
I shimmed the rear of the tank with some washers to get the tank off of the air cover. i brought it up off the carb and filter cover about a 1/4 or more. seat still works fine, no problem. hope that might help, i really don't understand what broke.
My carb parts finally came I installed that and raised the rear of the tank about 1/4". I installed the CVO mufflers with the extra packing and FullSac baffles as shown on

It's about as loud as it was with the Harley touring mufflers but a little deeper in tone and seems to have a little more power, but that could be my imagination.
I did install my other Christmas present, a real time air-fuel mixture guage, and it appears it is a little rich on the front cylinder most of the time. It does change at times but for the most part it is a little too rich, about 12.7 but I did not have it out more than a spin around the bock.
now the problems:
I do have a problem with vibration below 2500 rpm. I check the mounts and I don't remember the vibration being any more than stock when I first started riding it but may have been too excited to notice it. I wanted to check the engine alignment but I need to get a different setup to hold the bike as the lift gets in the road. Likewise I am thinking I may need to visit the primary again to confirm everything is tight. The bike runs good but is a little hard getting started when it is close to freezing. I am not sure what is causing the excessive vibration, I looked at the exhaust and everywhere to make sure nothing is touching the frame but still haven't found it. It's no big deal, I can live with it but don't want to ignore a possible problem. I wished I knew someone close by that had more experience, it may all be OK.
Great to hear you are up and running again! You may recall I had an S&S 107 installed a few months ago and was unhappy with the vibration I experienced. Almost 5,000 miles later it is much better!
So while it is worth checking over everything, if you only have low miles on it, your new motor may well smooth out as the miles roll by. It will be interesting to see what the other Ultima owners have to say.
I went from Pythons which is a dual exhaust to a Kerker 2 into 1 and the vibration of the motor was a lot less. (Not that the motor was bad compared to my old S&S) Driveability was so much better. Sound of the exhaust was nothing like the Pythons. Went back to the Pythons and the vibration returned. I bet you will find if you go back to your old exhaust, the vibration will go away. I would check the exhaust before tearing into the primary. Regarding your starting issue, Harley motors don't like the cold weather. 0 degrees that is. My 113 is a bear to start.
I hope this helps and let us know what you find out.

I first noticed the increased vibrations when I changed to Vance & Hines true dual headers with the Harley touring pipes is when , so when I went back stock type headers from an '08 with the Harley Touring mufflers I was hoping to also eliminate the problem but the vibration remained, and as I posted most recently I am now using the 4" CVO mufflers but the vibration still remains. I like the sound level of the CVO pipes much better than the Samson Touring pipes. I could try the Samson touring pipes again to see what affect it has, but the stock '90 header pipes just did not fit very well, they were tight against the nose cone.
One time I had this problem before, after installing Boomcans, and after switching back and forth many times over I eventually found the problem was a small bolt fell down between the primary and frame - it was in a space not easily seen, but when the rpms were right it would pass the vibrations to the frame. Unfortunately, I looked several times over and can't find anything that would be close to hitting. I did move the right floorboard out for better clearance, so I know it's not hitting there.
Maybe my experience will be like "grbrown" and get better with time - I still didn't get 500 miles on it, just too cold.
Check the lower oil port (fitting) on the bottom of the oil pump for clearance. i noticed that mine was very close to the rear brake cylinder mount. I screwed the fitting in as far as possible and filed the top of the welded frame mount for the brake cylinder. i don't remeber if you replaced the engine mounts or not, but if they are not new there could be enough movement to hit the mount. (at least on my bike)
mine is hard to start when its cold if she sits for a couple days without riding her. i just figured she was pissed with me. you know how sensitve women are.
