Yes the BDL I ment is the one that fits in the primary. Comes with BDL dry clutch. I need the chain and both sprockets, the clutch drum being the expensive one.

The primary on this thing is long overdue for overhaul. The chain and sprokets are the originals. I bought this thing new and have only ever cleaned it up and put it back on. Use the Harley spring loaded auto adjuster. I don't know exactly how many miles as this is the thire of fourth speedo. The gears in them wear out. I put 20000 miles on it last year alone, so its alot. Does anyone know anything about BDL belt drives. It dosen't cost any more to change this to belt than to replace chain and sprokets. Would it cut down on noise and with the exception of changing a belt once in awhile, what other differences? I take alot of trips in the good weather and often do 1200 mile three day weekends.

Thank Yall

I took out my primary belt drive and went back to chain, an enclosed wet primary has a much quieter clutch and I think works better. The chain is strong enough if you keep it under 200hp I run an S&S wet clutch on a 127 and it works great. The only time I can see using a primary belt is maybe for the looks of an open belt drive and if you have huge power with the need for a dry cluch and 4 - 6" belt

Hey fellows,

hope all are well and enjoying the weather. My question is for the FLH riders, or anyone for that matter, that have replaced their motors with larger displacement engines.. How many of you fellows are using the "race brace" which ties the right side of the tranny and the nose cone together ?? I have been using one for a while and every time i need to get to the oil pump or anything in that area, i have to dissemble the right side of the bike to get to anything. Got a leak coming from a bolt on the oil pump. Is the race brace worth the trouble? PaJoe,grbrown, miacycles , classicbeast ? anybody ?

later...........

Paco,

I bought a SE racebrace intending to fit it with my S&S 107, but it wouldn't match up to the new motor so I ended up selling it. It needed so much taken off it to mate with the new engine it wouldn't have been of much use. My S&S man who fitted the new motor didn't reckon I needed it anyway!

I tightened the handing on my 1990 bike with a True-Track Trackula kit, which transformed it. The same S&S man reckoned at the time it was the best handling dresser he had ever ridden - and the only big engined one he would risk riding in the wet (in the Welsh mountains)!

Weather isn't too bad, although winter revisited for a few days. I had expected to get my bike back on the road for April, but have hit a snag bleeding the bl33ding front brakes, having fitted new pads/pucks. That's what comes of doing that extra little job....

Paco,

Do you think the "race brace" has been worth the effort? I don't have one, and unfortunately I don't have the True-Track Trackula kit either. Both sound like good ideas.

I have never put a race brace on an Evo. The Shovel heads hads some problems breakin inner primaries when you really got them making HP, so they might have helped there.

Don't have any experence with a brace. If I neded one I don't know about it yet. This 85 with air susp front and rear, right on alignment and HD fork and shock oil handles great like it is. I may learn something different when I start airing out this new engine. have a little over 1100 miles on it now.
Will change oil again, going to full syn now. Didn't see Buute's post untill after installing the BDL belt drive but so far this thing is all I could ask for. All noise from primary gone. This engine now is smoother running and more quiet than the 80 evo. Yhe clutch does wimper a little bit on engagement but I only use the clutch to engage first and take off after that don't use it. The stock stuff took more time to remove than this thing took to install, adjust and get down the road. wilol get into timing curve next and then jetting. Getting right about 35 MPG with out of the box set up. Love the power.

Thanks for the replys,

the brace sounded good at first, but if no one has had any problems busting inner primaries then i am not going back without it. it is aggrevating. i had to space out, build a spacer for the clutch pull cover just to get the clutch cable to fit . cant get to anything close to the oil pump. I am going to run without it. if i bust the primary, then it will just get popped. mia, u have put 120's on without a brace right ? as i understand u havent had any problems. the only time i really hammer her is when the boys with the 110 -113" screaming eagles want a little of my Ultima 107 ". they got to catch her first !

Never used one on my 127" or on my 110" S&S motor both of these motors saw lots of hard riding I thought it might be a good idea to have one but no cracks on my inner primary and the transmission has not moved or bolts come loose so I don't think I need one. Sounds like too much trouble to me.
