Default 1998 Softail Speedometer

I bought a used speedometer on eBay and got hosed. The 3 wires that go into the speedo are cut flush at the base, is there a way to open the speedometer (safely), to enable me to get new wires onto this thing?

Yes. You can peel back gently the ring all the way around until it separates. It’s annoying and time consuming.

FYI, but squeeze may not be worth the juice, since will bank that led screen is bleeding badly to start with.

So on that note, before you put the speedo back together, fire up the board to see if you need to replace the LCD screen while you have it apart.
Also, with board alone out of case, great time to send the speedo off to third party shop, to have them correct the mileage on it, since easy for them to get to the Eprom chip.

Back up a step.
Why are you replacing speedometer?

They can be fixed and not too expensive either.

Yep, since if your going to repair a speedo with LCD bleeding, may as well open up the old one, replace the LCD in it, so you don't have to screw around with correcting the mileage.

Or is mileage is not a problem, then just go with new replacement Speedo, that use TFT display, the don't have the ink bleed problems like the old displays isntead.

Using the acquired speedometer as LCD donor might be an option for you.
The mileage on LCD odometer will be retained.
* The needle push on is the only concern since it must be pressed onto post at perfect location.
Do NOT place glass on speedometer until you test accuracy.
If you do not test first then the needle indication of speed will be incorrect and will not match miles traveled.
To clarify the needle might read 45 MPH but the odometer will record 35 miles traveled because the needle was pushed onto post with an error.
Since the wires were cut flush...it leads me to believe that someone was following service book instructions.
Makes me wonder about function.
