Whats goin on guys? Joined the forum a year ago (almost exactly), but forgot about it... guess I forgot to bookmark! haha Anyway, Im have'n some trouble with my bike
This morning, I started the bike and noticed that the tach was jumping all over the place. As I rolled the bike outta the garage, it started to idle and sound very rough. I let it idle for a little while thinking it was just the cool weather, but that didn't do much good. I tried to ride it down the road and back.. it ran ok, but the tach was going crazy and then it pretty much stopped working. When I got back I pulled the plugs.. on one side, there was a little oil.. the other side was pretty fouled with black carbon.
One other thing I noticed is that there was some corrosion / acid on the left side of the frame next to the battery. Also, it has been leaking a lot more oil from the crank breather..
Oh, btw the bike is a 84 FXRS with mostly S&S parts (jugs, cyclinder, flywheel, and super e) and Dyna single fire ignition.
Is that a dyna ign with the fly weights (dyna S ) using a crane adapter for the tach or is that a dyna 2000 style ? Trying to figure out why the tach needle is jumping other than vibration off the bike Oil on one spark plug and not the other plug (same cylinder ) ? Has this bike been sitting awhile ?
Thanks for the reply... Im not sure which ign, it is..the PO put it on. Should it say on the module some where? I can check this afternoon.
As far as the bike sitting for a while... no it hasn't. Ive been riding it about every day for the couple months...no long rides, just short skips into town.
The Dyna S ign is visible inside the cone cover on the right side Take the plate off you will see a plate with a module at 12 and 6 oclock If you see an electronic plate with a red led light and several switches this could be a Dyna 2000 i ign If you see the stock HD pickup plate and there is a module mounted somewhere on the frame it would be a Dyna 2000 More than you really wanted to know ! The spark plug with the oil on it is it firing ? Pull the plug out crank it over with the plug tip on the cylinder to see if you got good spark
I've seen that happen when (or just before) a coil was going out, which could also explain the rough running. And, I've seen a tach go bad that caused one to miss.(on a shovel with stock electronic ignition) Believe I'd start with disconnecting the tach and see how it ran, for starters. If it's the same, check the coil with an ohm meter.
Ok.. well now I have a new problem... when I go to start it, I get nothing.. no clicking.. no noise... although if I leave the key on for a second, I hear a single click from the start relay... Any ideas?
I did some more testing... for a while, I was thinking I had a bad coil cuz I wasn't getting a spark on the front cylinder... well it turns out one of the screws holding the positive wires on the coil had stripped and fell off...
I put a new one on and the bike started right up! Runs good, but is spitting out some white smoke... is that something I should be concerned about? Probably just excess fuel burning off?
It seems like there is always that one damn screw! Tomorrow Im gonna do a good torque check on all of bolts and screws...
