Connecting the negative leads allows the primary field to collapse, something is triggering that collapse, other than the module, would be my pick.

Substituting the coil would tell you a lot that you need to know.

Sounds like that coil is shorting out somehow given the module and wiring are ok. I had a VW Van once that the coil would quit/shut off when it got too hot in the engine compartment. I would sit for an hour or so and start it up and drive away. Point being that coils can do funny stuff.

Have you rotated the engine at any time during these tests? You could be right on the firing mark at the crank causing the coil to load and fire as you turn on the key ...sounds weird but have had that happen with a points ign when working on a car engine ..happens really fast though as you turn the key almost an instant snap of the arc ....

alright, so i rotated the motor, (thanx oldwildwally) then i wired in a coil from an old chevy i had laying around. i also attached a plug wire and a spark tester. i switched the ign on and same thing it loaded up for like 6 seconds then fired a serious spark accross the tester. then all seems normal, batt voltage is good, all seems fine after that first spark. soooo then all confused its back to google. im looking around on compu fires page and my module has something they are calling " soft start circuitry for easy starting in low voltage conditions" but cant find anything about what it actually is. so now im thinking this is supposed to happen since it only fires it once then all is normal. so this means ive been chasing what i thought was a problem and wasting what little free time i have not out blasting around on it. so now im gonna call compu fire tomorrow and find out since the tech line is closed today. guess ill let you all know tomorrow if this is supposed to happen.

again thank you to all of you who have been helping me with this.

oh boy, ok so i talked to the tech support, they were VERY helpful. so here is what happens incase any of you ever have this happen to you. the module has a delay built into the system that delays the spark a few seconds when you initially turn the motor over to give it time to get up to a good rotation in case your batt is alittle low. however, the timer starts as soon as your motor is actually spinning. so what is happening is i turn the ign switch on, it charges the coil, and waits to see the crank turn, if it doesnt turn over in a predetermined amount of time the module goes into "sleep mode" to conserve batt power, when this happens the coil also discharges and waits for you to hit the start button to reset this process... sooooo this whole time ive been chasing something that is working perfectly...

Well that just goes to show the value of calling the manufacturer....those that actually speak English anyway ;-)

Really useful to know that about the system though.
