Got it all apart, stator doesn't have that burned smell, but all the magnets in the rotor are bunched up together, with big holes between some of them. Damn!
I've already put the new OEM regulator in. Should I stick with OEM, or can I go with aftermarket stator and rotor? Will try to upload photo if I can figure out how with iPad / iPhone.
I would either use HD OEM brand or cycleelectric. The EFI models use a 45 amp high-output rotor and is alot more beefier than the standard version on the carburetored models. Make sure you get the right rotor!
If you replace the stator as well, make sure you use new stator screws. If you reuse the screws, they will eventually loosen up allowing the stator to wiggle. Makes a strange noise immediately following engine shutdown.

Thinking back I did notice a strange sound coming from that side, but it would happen only when I started it - right after letting off the starter button, sort of a high-pitched clunk.
Anyway, I went with OEM & replaced everything in the charging system (45 amp). Duct tape and harmonic balancer puller and everything was safe! Special cut me a block of 2x4 treated lumber with a jigsaw to make that primary chain locking tool. Broke just as I hit 150 ft-lbs of torque on the axle bolt!
THEN ... when I went to adjust the clutch, damn: the adjuster assembly was totally rusted together, so I went ahead and replaced the clutch cable as well - complete with freshly greased *****!
Glad this weekend is OVER and I can get back out there and RIDE!! Thanks to all for the suggestions & advice!!

I use an 1/8" steel bar and brace it between the gears on the compensator and the clutch basket.
When you say axle bolt are you talking about the compensator nut?
